Pubblicata nel 1964, è la canzone più famosa del duo “Simon & Garfunkel” ed è uno dei pezzi più belli ed iconici nella storia della musica. Il testo della canzone è sempre contemporaneo, una poesia piena di metafore che parla dell’incomunicabilità. “Il narratore” presente nel testo assume quasi un tono biblico perché parla del destino dell’umanità, incapace di comunicare. La modernità del pezzo sta nell’ alludere ad un nuovo Dio, paragonabile agli smartphone di oggi.

All’ inizio del brano è presente una invocazione alla notte, quasi fosse una vera e propria musa. Il protagonista della canzone cammina per le vie acciottolate fino a quando un lampo non interrompe il suono del silenzio.

Chi ascolta è sicuramente colpito dal tema dell’incomunicabilità: migliaia di persone che parlano senza comunicare realmente, che sentono senza ascoltare. Una sorta di “babele” moderna, in cui l’assordante suono si trasforma in un silenzio vuoto.
