Most GSD staff and students (grades 3-12) can access NotebookLM from the Granite Bookmarks when fully signed into Chrome with your district account.
You can also go directly to notebooklm.google.com and login with your district email.
Hey K-12 Educators, stop building videos from scratch! NotebookLM's Video Overviews feature transforms your existing class documents (PDFs, Docs, Slides, YouTube links) into engaging, AI-narrated video explainers in seconds.
How it helps:
Review: Quickly summarize complex topics for student review.
Introduce: Provide visual previews for new units.
Differentiate: Offer an alternative, engaging learning format.
Simply upload your sources, click "Video Overview" in the Studio panel, and the AI generates a customized video based only on your materials. Use a Steering Prompt (e.g., "Explain for 5th graders") to fine-tune the focus.
Turn your resources into dynamic learning tools today!
The "Video Overview" feature generates an AI-narrated video overview based on the sources you have added to your notebook.
Open or Create a Notebook:
Go to NotebookLM and either open an existing notebook with your class material, or create a new one for the specific video topic.
2. Add Your Sources:
Upload the materials you want the video to be based on. This is the most crucial step, as the AI will pull content, quotes, images, and data directly from these documents.
Sources can include PDFs, Google Docs, Google Slides, or even YouTube links.
Tip for Educators: Curate your sources to be focused and relevant to the specific lesson or topic you want the video to cover for the best results.
Access the Studio Panel:
In your open notebook, look for the "Studio" panel (usually on the right side of the screen).
2. Select "Video Overview":
In the Studio panel, find and select the "Video Overview" tile to start the generation process.
3. Customize Your Video (Optional but Recommended):
Before generating, you'll often have a chance to customize the video. Look for a "Customize" option (sometimes found by clicking the three-dot menu next to "Video Overviews" or a pencil icon on the tile).
Key Customization Options for Educators:
Format: Choose Explainer (structured, comprehensive for in-depth understanding) or Brief (bite-sized, for grasping core ideas quickly).
Language: Select the narration language for your students.
Steering Prompt: Use this to guide the AI's focus. Provide instructions to:
Specify a target audience (e.g., "for 9th-grade history students").
Focus on specific concepts (e.g., "focus only on the causes of the American Revolution and ignore details about the major battles").
Set a learning goal (e.g., "create a video to help students understand the scientific method steps").
