The Google Gemini LTI™ (Learning Tools Interoperability) integration brings the power of Gemini and NotebookLM directly into your Canvas course, offering students and educators dynamic AI assistance.
Here are the directions for a teacher to use NotebookLM and Gemini features in their Canvas course.
Add a NotebookLM Notebook or Gemini Gem to Your Course
You can share a pre-created NotebookLM notebook (containing your course materials) or a custom Gemini Gem (an AI expert on a topic, like an FAQ bot) with your students.
Click the Google Gemini link in your Course Navigation menu. This launches the Gemini Canvas App.
In the Gemini Canvas App interface, you will see an option to Create New or Add to Course.
To Add a NotebookLM Notebook:
Add to Course: You will see a list of your existing NotebookLM notebooks to choose from or you can click on Create to make one.
Select one or more notebooks from the list or Create a new NotebookLM.
Click Add to Course.
To Add a Gemini Gem:
You can choose a pre-made Gem that you created by clicking Add to Course or Create a New Gem.
Add to Course: Select the Gem you want to use.
Click Add to Course.
3. Using NotebookLM and Gems as a Student Resource
Once you've added the Notebook or Gem to the course:
Students can click the Google Gemini link in the Course Navigation.
They will see the NotebookLM Notebooks and/or Gemini Gems you have shared listed there.
Clicking on a shared item will open it, allowing them to interact with the AI assistant, grounded in your materials, right within the Canvas environment.
1. Make the Gemini Tool Visible in Your Course Navigation
Navigate to your specific Canvas Course.
Click on Settings in the Course Navigation menu.
Go to the Navigation tab (sometimes called "Apps").
Find Google Gemini in the list of items you can hide or show.
Click the options menu (usually a gear or three dots) and select Enable, or drag the item from the hidden section (bottom) to the visible section (top).
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save. The Gemini link will now appear in your course's navigation menu.
