The ECST Mathematics Department goal for the 2023-2024 school year is to improve the modeling and reasoning conceptual categories reported on standardized assessments by implementing new strategies learned and developed during professional development and professional learning communities.
ACTIONABLE ITEMs
The diagnostic assessments were shared via email on Monday. The window to administer the diagnostic assessments ends on September 29th. The results from the Delta Math diagnostics will be shared in a folder (links were sent via email) and updated every other day. Be reminded that you may use several data points to determine the starting points for your students, including the diagnostic assessment. Please include the administration of the diagnostic assessments in your lesson planning to occur during the next two weeks.
From the NJDOE....
Using Multiple Measures to Determine Student Starting Points
Using multiple measures of a student’s starting point not only allows better targets to be set but provides useful information to help drive instruction. Information that a teacher typically gathers from students at the beginning of the year should be used to get a rough sense of their starting points.1 This includes but is not limited to current grades and test scores, prior year grades and test scores, and markers of future success such as homework completion, class participation, and academic independence, etc.. Diagnostic pre-assessments, when utilized, provide maximum benefit to teachers and students when they are used in conjunction with other measures and in situations where they:
• Are used to evaluate a set of skills;
• Are high quality and vertically aligned; and
• Are normally used by the teacher for instructional purposes.

Dropping this little nugget HERE as well. Interested in your feedback. Then I will know who is really reading the newsletter. And who gets my humor. Just saying.
The Delta Math account information has been updated. I sent an email to indicate that your account had either been updated OR you should have received an email from Delta Math about your account. Contact me, if needed.
I sent your emails to Math Medic. You should have received access to the assessment platform. Please search your emails before contacting me. Following up with Calc Medic assessment platform. More information will be shared shortly.
The eMath Instruction codes were shared in the math department September meeting agenda. Please be responsible with the limited number of accounts available. If you teach it, update your account. If you do not teach it, ask a friend to share.
On September 20, 2023, a group of teachers and administrators attended an all day professional development on artificial intelligence presented by Pedagogy Cloud. It was an informative day packed with valuable instructional activities and time saving tips for teachers. The information will be turn-keyed to all staff through inservice and department meetings.
From the U.S. Department of Education report Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning (Insights and Recommendations, May 2023):
"We envision a technology-enhanced future more like an electric bike and less like robot vacuums. On an electric bike, the human is fully aware and fully in control, but their burden is less, and their effort is multiplied by a complementary technological enhancement. Robot vacuums do their job, freeing the human from involvement or oversight."
As always, the ECST Mathematics Department will be at the forefront of responsibly integrating AI into planning and instructional delivery!
PROFESSIONAL/INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES WORTH SHARING
Great activity for Geometry students! Check out this Desmos activity presented by Maria Gallardo Lie (Spain) HERE. This activity uses many of the features that Dr. Milou shared with us last year at the Desmos PD.
"I was inspired by stained glass windows and the aspects of a human face. I used the different shapes to show scale and proportion. Hope you like it :)"
Connect with TI online for the 2023 Virtual T³IC, Sept. 30 (Saturday). They are celebrating 35 years of helping educators make a lasting impact on student success.
Join colleagues and guest speakers for a full day of professional development for teachers, exchanging new ideas and insights to enhance teaching and learning. The registration is FREE this year and certificates will be awarded.
Over the summer I was following Prof. Rob Bob (aka Mr. Tarrou). He has a fabulous set of videos ranging from Algebra 1 to AP Statistics. Here are some of my favorites:
