Reminder: Math Department Meeting on Wednesday, April 21, 2021
The Spring 2021 administration of the NJSLA-Algebra 1 will not be administered to the 9th grade students. The NJDOE Start Strong assessments will be administered in the fall of 2021. More information will follow during the next department meeting. One more thing off your plates. Phew! (for now)
As was discussed at the last department meeting, the math department teachers have the option to administer a final exam on the assigned day, or assign a project that is due no later than the assigned day for math exams during the week of June 7-11, 2021.
A grade MUST be inserted in the X2 field. More information will be discussed at the next department meeting.
Follow the exam schedule provided by your principal.
One of the observations made during the March 31st SAT & Sports in Statistics Quizizz was how deficient students are in measures of central tendency (present company might be included, lol). So, I searched for review videos that could be viewed with the students or assigned to them for flipped classroom instruction (EdPuzzle, maybe?). This is what I found from Crash Course Statistics :
Thank you to all who participated in the March Mathness competition. If you have not yet had a chance to view the recording of the final competition, you can find it HERE.
Another note ~
During the competition, I was quite impressed with the students' logical thinking, investigative skills, and discussion about the buttons for standard deviation. On the Desmos scientific calculator, there are two standard deviation buttons: sample (stdev) and population (stdevp) standard deviation.
Do you know the difference?
The results of the PD survey were shared in the last newsletter. You can view them by CLICKING HERE. This is the plan...
The names in BLUE are those who are interested in discussing or learning more about the topic. The names in GREEN are those who have indicated their confidence to share what they know about the topic with others or to lead a discussion.
WHEN AND HOW? Those in the group decide when to meet and how often. The names in GREEN should email the group members to set up a date & time to meet. It can be on Zoom because those participating are in different buildings, or it can be in a classroom because the group decided on building based delivery. YOU decide. Remember to record the time you meet ON THIS FORM so I can award PD hours.
In the event that you have changed your mind about being BLUE or GREEN, contact me. If the group decides they prefer to hear from a presenter from outside of the district, contact me. Need help finding a colleague's email? Contact me. Any other ideas? Contact me.
A digital bulletin board may look like what your walls and boards may look like, should you happen to be present in your classroom. How do we handle not having that physical space to highlight key concepts? Where do we showcase student work? Where do we create a word wall for students to reference? Where can we post reference sheets for standardized testing? Where do we hang all those motivational quotes that inspire the minds of the students?
