In last week's newsletter, the department members were asked how they encouraged quiet students to participate. Thank you to all who contributed to the discussion. Here are a few of the suggestions:
Jeeyoun Shin (and others) "Some students prefer to leaving a message on the chat due to loud background noise. I let them share their answers or thoughts on the chat. "
Luis Rodriguez: "...I usually allow other students to assist the student in question and follow-up with them afterwards...."
Elisa Tejada: "... So what I did was that I changed the breakout rooms to be smaller (max 3) and always the same students...."
Christine Lopez-Cassano: "Chats do become difficult, as the teacher, to constantly observed the chat, so I have begun to assign students to help."
Kevin Jagniatkowski & Peter Gambino: "They know that if I call on them, they generally have the correct answer already written so the fear of being wrong is usually gone and they aren't afraid to speak." "For example saying, 'Carlos, I like the answer you posted. Can you explain how you got it?' "
Claudio Bernal: "I randomly select students using a spinner with their names at https://wheelofnames.com/ "
