The ECST Mathematics Department goal for the 2023-2024 school year is to improve the modeling and reasoning conceptual categories reported on standardized assessments by implementing new strategies learned and developed during professional development and professional learning communities.
ACTIONABLE ITEMs

On Wednesday (10/4), the NJ state board of education approved the new math standards (NJSLS-M).
Educators from across the state worked collaboratively to develop the proposed revisions over the past year. The following link takes you to the proposed revisions.
You can also view the NJDOE presentation on the proposed revisions delivered at the State Board of Education on April 5, 2023 as well as at regional meetings:
The class visits continue...
As in years past, my goal is to visit every 11th grade class to stress the importance of the 3 assessments that the Juniors will be taking this year (PSAT, NJGPA & SAT). I will focus on the pacing modifications to the curricula to best prepare the students for the skills presented in all 3 assessments. I will not be discussing graduation requirements.
This CHART may be of interest to you. It aligns the NJSLS with the topics for PSAT, SAT, NJGPA and NJSLA.
A student friendly slide presentation has been created to assist you in discussing the Digital PSAT & SAT with your 10th & 11th grade students. Access the presentation HERE.

PROFESSIONAL/INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES WORTH SHARING
Last week I shared an article (see below) about assigning homework. Over the weekend, Math/Calc Medic shared this 3-minute blog about homework by Karen Sleno, Homework Is Broken. Here's How We Can Fix It. It is all connected! This conversation ties into some of the summer PD as well. Please read both so that we can continue the discussion at the department meeting on October 18th.
Last week's article, if needed.

A couple of years ago, the platform ASSISTMENTS was introduced. At that time, it was clunky and had cobwebs - it was definitely not the preferred resource that aligned with IM. IT HAS IMPROVED! The items from the IM question & assessment sets are all available to assign to students digitally. Check it out HERE. Do we need an informational PD session on this? Contact me if you are interested.
The quickest way to restore a single tab you closed by accident is with a keyboard shortcut. On a PC, use Ctrl+Shift+T. On a Mac, use Cmd+Shift+T. If you want to restore multiple tabs, or if you need a tab you closed a while ago, just keep pressing Ctrl+Shift+T and your tabs will reappear in the order in which they were closed. Bonus: If you accidentally close your entire browser window altogether, just open a new Chrome window and the keyboard shortcut will reopen everything at once. This should help restore tabs you've collected in groups. This is a great trick for the times when a system update forces you to close your browser or restart your computer altogether.
I will post this on the Schoology math department group page. I believe that many members of the math team are using these instructional strategies in some combination. I am interested in your feedback. Thank you in advance for your contributions.
