Wed., October 25 - PSAT School Day for all 10th & 11th grade students
Mon., November 6 - Department-Based Inservice (Single Session for Students)
On Wednesday (10/4), the NJ state board of education approved the new math standards (NJSLS-M). More will be discussed at the October 18 department meeting.
Educators from across the state worked collaboratively to develop the proposed revisions over the past year. The following link takes you to the proposed revisions.
You can also view the NJDOE presentation on the proposed revisions delivered at the State Board of Education on April 5, 2023 as well as at regional meetings:
The class visits continue...
As in years past, my goal is to visit every 11th grade class to stress the importance of the 3 assessments that the Juniors will be taking this year (PSAT, NJGPA & SAT). I will focus on the pacing modifications to the curricula to best prepare the students for the skills presented in all 3 assessments. I will not be discussing graduation requirements.
This CHART may be of interest to you. It aligns the NJSLS with the topics for PSAT, SAT, NJGPA and NJSLA.
A student friendly slide presentation has been created to assist you in discussing the Digital PSAT & SAT with your 10th & 11th grade students. Access the presentation HERE.

PROFESSIONAL/INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES WORTH SHARING
From an email sent by Rachel (Rise Over Run). Good new is that many of you have been using these strategies
"I asked teachers on Instagram to tell me game-changing strategies that made their math lessons more effective. Several of the ideas were small changes that can have a big impact.
Here are some of the most common suggestions to take your math lessons to the next level:
Manipulatives: Students are never too old for manipulatives! Adding a hands-on element builds understanding and engagement.
Timers: Timing part of the lesson or an activity is a great tool for keeping students (and ourselves!) on track and focused.
Number Talks: This routine can promote fluency and number sense with any age group.
Vertical White Boards: Popularized in the book Building Thinking Classrooms, having students work together at white boards increases collaboration and thinking.
Movement: Incorporating movement into lessons helps keep students engaged. And, when the teacher also moves around, the meaningful interactions and conversations increase.
Discovery Learning: Allowing students the chance to investigate and figure out math concepts can build their understanding and confidence.
Visuals: Supporting new concepts with visuals helps students make sense of the math.
Productive Struggle: Remembering that struggle is a part of the learning process, we can help students have a positive mindset when they face challenges.
I hope you find this list helpful. If you have a game-changing strategy you use in your math class, I'd love to hear about it!"
A couple of years ago, the platform ASSISTMENTS was introduced. At that time, it was clunky and had cobwebs - it was definitely not the preferred resource that aligned with IM. IT HAS IMPROVED! The items from the IM question & assessment sets are all available to assign to students digitally. Check it out HERE. Do we need an informational PD session on this? Contact me if you are interested.

Throwing this out there... What about a Rubik's Cube competition for March 2024?
