The ECST Mathematics Department goal for the 2023-2024 school year is to improve the modeling and reasoning conceptual categories reported on standardized assessments by implementing new strategies learned and developed during professional development and professional learning communities.
ACTIONABLE ITEMs
The diagnostic assessments will be shared via email on Monday. The window to administer the diagnostic assessments ends on September 29th. In the meantime, be reminded that you may use several data points to determine the starting points for your students, including the diagnostic assessment. Please include the administration of the diagnostic assessments in your lesson planning to occur during the next two weeks.
From the NJDOE....
Using Multiple Measures to Determine Student Starting Points
Using multiple measures of a student’s starting point not only allows better targets to be set but provides useful information to help drive instruction. Information that a teacher typically gathers from students at the beginning of the year should be used to get a rough sense of their starting points.1 This includes but is not limited to current grades and test scores, prior year grades and test scores, and markers of future success such as homework completion, class participation, and academic independence, etc.. Diagnostic pre-assessments, when utilized, provide maximum benefit to teachers and students when they are used in conjunction with other measures and in situations where they:
• Are used to evaluate a set of skills;
• Are high quality and vertically aligned; and
• Are normally used by the teacher for instructional purposes.

PROFESSIONAL/INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES WORTH SHARING
A reminder of resources I have shared in early September...
For those mathematics department members that are veterans and new... this folder of posters and bulletin board cut outs may be helpful to adorn your walls and boards. The collection has grown over the years. ECST Math Dept Posters
In fact, ALL of our middle school courses — including N-Gen Math 6, 7, and 8, as well as our two Algebra 1 courses — have been translated into Spanish. These Spanish lessons and homework sets are available at no additional cost and mirror their English counterparts. Teachers and students report having the Spanish option extremely useful, especially in those classes with one or more ELL students, as it allows all students to be following the same content regardless of preferred first language.
That's right! If you turn on closed-captioning, you can then translate subtitles into any language available on YouTube. The list is very comprehensive. For instructions on how to turn on translated subtitles, check out this video we created just for you.
Do you have a colleague who might benefit from ELL math content? Simply fill out the 30-second form below to share a no-cost trial membership with your friend. We'll take care of the rest!
If you have any pictures for me to feature on the math department IG, forward them to me with a description. Mr. Azab is doing a fantastic job keeping me stocked with photos!
