REMINDERS & IMPORTANT NOTES
Mon., November 6 - Department-Based Inservice (Single Session for Students)
Wed., November 15 - Mathematics Department Meeting
Wed., December 20 - Mathematics Department Meeting
On Wednesday (10/4), the NJ state board of education approved the new math standards (NJSLS-M). Moving forward, a change to the standards will be highlighted each week in the newsletter.
Educators from across the state worked collaboratively to develop the proposed revisions over the past year. The following link takes you to the proposed revisions.
You can also view the NJDOE presentation on the proposed revisions delivered at the State Board of Education on April 5, 2023 as well as at regional meetings:
A colleague from Warren Hills school district was kind enough to create a crosswalk document for the 2023 NJSLS-Math. I have edited the document to include only the HS standards. More will be discussed at the November department meeting.
PROFESSIONAL/INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES WORTH SHARING
From Robert Kaplinsky...
"Sometimes I see math problems that are intended to be opportunities for students to apply mathematics, but wind up just being fake. This often happens with "real-world" problems. I'm sure they're well intended, but they often miss the mark.
Take a look at the problem below. What would happen if you completely removed the context? Could students still solve it?
I'm afraid that students could solve it without the context... and that's not a good thing. I've written up a blog post that includes a version of the above problem with the context erased. It's perfect for sharing with your friends and colleagues."

"Just sharing a little BTC for adults…
This year our school added a hall monitor. After a couple days I realized he must get pretty bored just walking in circles all day, so I started posting problems for him to work on in his travels through our wing. Just handed him a marker one morning and told him he would need it. He made pretty quick work of the basic Four Fours and Make Six type problems. This one took him 2 days 😄
If you did not preview this resource last week, here is your last chance!

Would you like a problem-based lesson for every single Common Core State Standard for math from grades 3 through HS? Geoff Krall has compiled a list that will be sure to save you time. Check it out.
Exciting news from the Landis Family!
When my nephew was born, his lower left ventricle was not developed. By the time he was 3 years old, he had 3 open heart surgeries to reconstruct his heart. Eventually, Francis will have to have a heart transplant, but for now he is doing well. The Make a Wish Foundation is granting his wish to play catch with Tom Brady on Tuesday, October 24th. Click the link to view the segment on Good Morning America where Francis was highlighted (minus his two front teeth, lol).
