"April is the cruelest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain. Winter kept us warm, covering Earth in forgetful snow, feeding A little life with dried tubers." -T. S. Elliot (1922)
Dear Helen Keller Middle School Families,
At some point every April, I find myself quoting the first line from The Wasteland, saying that "April is the cruelest month." I used it (maybe incorrectly) to complain about the high fluctuations in the weather from summer temperatures to snow in a matter of hours. As I reread T.S Elliot's entire poem over break, I came to a different understanding, that Elliot poses April as cruel because it teases us with the rebirth of spring amongst the still decomposing remnants of last autumn. That nature has a way of brushing off death by producing lilies and willows and this is cruel because we humans do not have that luxury, we must hold onto the pains of the past despite the beauty of the moment.
It was not the April Cruelty but the beauty of the moment that was evident at HKMS this week. The rebirth of learning for students and staff returning full of energy, with stories of traveling adventures, cultural experiences, and the excitement of reconnecting with friends and peers was palpable. Plus we had a Hawaiian Spirit Day! I hope we managed to capture the energy and excitement all around HKMS in this newsletter as we close the books on another impressive week of students overcoming challenges, thinking creatively, and displaying new abilities across content areas and grade levels.
There is a bit of business, we need your help with for next school year. ER9 will be applying for Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) grant. This national fund currently has about $1 billion, which seems like a lot of money, but when spread all over the country it goes fast. This particular grant could take up to 12 months for fund disbursement, but the sooner we apply the quicker the process. If we are fortunate enough to receive funding, we will use it to purchase new Chromebooks for our students. In order to be eligible for the grant, we need your input about how your child(ren)'s device usage and home internet capabilities.
Please take a few moments (really, will take less than 2 minutes) to answer the brief questionnaire regarding student device technologies at home by Tuesday, April 26th. https://forms.gle/aAeuVVmAACFYaWaZA
THANK YOU!!
As we head into another well-deserved beautiful spring weekend, I hope you and your family have a chance to get in some outside activities and enjoy the fresh air of early spring with no April cruelty.
Enjoy!

3rd Trimester SMART Goals
by Sara Terry, MS, NCC, LPCA
HKMS School Counselor
Over the month of April, students are setting up their Trimester III SMART Goals to end the school year off with success. These goals are part of our Student Success Plans. What even is a SMART goal? Students were given the following information regarding SMART Goals:
Specific: What exactly are you trying to achieve?
Measurable: How will you know when you have achieved this goal?
Achievable: Is this goal realistic? Do you have the tools you need to achieve it?
Relevant: Why is this goal important in your life?
Timely: When do you want to achieve this goal?
Goals are inputted into a program called Naviance which is widely used within the high school. However, we begin using this program here-and-there in middle school to get students acquainted before high school and use it as an "electronic portfolio" to bring with them to the high school. Students focus on three areas to set their goals in: Academic, Personal/Social, and Career. Below, you can find more information as to what students are learning about in this lesson.
Academic: What academic goal do you want to set for yourself to complete by the end of the school year? Is there a certain class you need to raise your hand in more? Are there vocabulary words you need to study more in depth? Is there a book you need to read by the end of the year? Do you need to manage your time better by making a study plan every Sunday night for 30 minutes? There are so many ways to develop this academic goal that is specific for your own needs!
Personal/Social: What personal goal do you want to set for yourself to attain by the end of the school year? Do you want to make a new friend? Do you want to speak more in class? Do you want to be part of a play? Do you want to join a club? Do you want to learn more about people who you don't really know right now? There are so many areas of growth all of us can have personally and socially. We are always working towards our "best self" and this goal will be the one of many goals to get us there.
Career: What are you learning now at HKMS that will help you in your future career? What are your interests/disinterests? Are there careers that match up to your interests? What do you need to do to get yourself to master this career goal? Is this a short-term goal or a long-term goal? Truly, our career goals can begin at any stage of development, but this goal will be identified in depth at the high school level for juniors and seniors. Listed below is the typical
"course of action" for college/career development within middle school:
8th Grade: identify current interests/passions to guide selection in high school courses, explore career clusters in Naviance & "favorite" three that you are interested in
7th Grade: identify interests and traits that match careers
6th Grade: learn your best study practices based off of your learning style
SMART goals are ongoing throughout middle school and high school. They allow for students to work towards something they find important to them, and instills pride. With this skill, students will be able to innately formulate goals within their future careers and personal lives to live happy and healthy lives.
Parent/Guardian Questionnaire:
The Counseling Team is requesting your input in regards to hosting a potential career fair for the 2022/2023 school year! Please fill out this short questionnaire linked HERE.
All of the wonderful activities, events, and learning going on around HKMS this week (and beyond!).
Eighth grade will take the 8/9 PSAT will be next Wednesday 4/27. The link here for some great test-taking tips. There are also a few things you can do to be sure you are at your best on test day!
STUDENTS MUST BRING THEIR OWN CALCULATORS AND NUMBER 2 PENCILS TO SCHOOL.
✓ Mark the test on your calendar.
✓Get a good night's sleep the night before the test. Wake up early and get to school on time. A rested and unrushed brain is much better then tired and rushed one!
✓Eat a healthy breakfast the morning of the test. This will help make sure your brain is working at its best.
✓Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the day’s weather.
