Dear HKMS Families,
Today marks the first day of the third trimester! We have 120 days under our belt with 60 to go. This is a great time of year to sit with your child and assess their progress and how it matches their expectations for the year. T3 will be the most challenging of the year and of their academic career so far. Expect teachers to ramp up the expectations and work load as the trimester unfolds. Making sure your child has the scholarly fundamentals in order to rise to this challenge is extremely helpful. Over 25 years of working with middle-schoolers, those fundamentals for academic success have remained the same: organization, proactive engagement, and goal setting, specifically:
Implement a consistent assignment tracking system: Choose a method (digital or physical) that works for you and use it daily to stay on top of deadlines.
Utilize teacher extra help sessions: Attend regularly with specific questions to reinforce learning and address challenges.
Monitor academic progress via PowerSchool, but in a balanced way: Check weekly to review assignments and grades, avoiding excessive daily checks.
Maintain a structured and organized learning environment: Regularly clean and organize physical materials (binders, notebooks, backpack, locker) and digital resources (Google Classroom/Drive).
Establish clear and specific academic goals: Set achievable goals for each class, outlining the actions needed to reach them.
Over the next week, teachers will be finalizing T2 grades. Please have your child reach out to their teacher(s) if they have some late assignments coming in. It is much easier to make adjustments before grades are finalized. Even if it does not improve the grade, submitting missing work shows effort, care, and interest in their own learning.
This last week of the trimester featured many culminating projects, joyful Mikey's Madness events, and all the great teaching and learning you've come to expect of us! I hope you can take a few minutes to check it all out in this week's newsletter!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend,
Steve Clapp, Ed.D.
