Dear HKMS Families,
We can check May off the calendar, which is no small feat. During the school year, some months seem longer than others. As a teacher, I always thought March was far too long, and that October could use another holiday or two. But it turns out May is the longest of them all. This month we had 22 full days of school, March had 21 as did October. In addion to the number of days May provides, the level of work and expectations for students is at an all time high! This week alone, students are identifying themes in their novel, prepping for math final exams, designing hybrid animals, building robots, and preparing for the spring concerts! So, if the kids seem more exhausted then usual, they are not just complaining, the struggle is real.
So now that May is under our belt, we have some wonderful celebrations to look forward to! Next week will feature our spring concert series with our instrumental concert on Tuesday 6/4 starting promptly at 6:00 p.m. So far the weather looks good, so we can hold the concert outside in the "parent loop." This has become a great venue we started using in 2021 and really kicks off the summer outside concert season! On Thursday 6/6, the choral voices of our choirs will fill the SSES cafetorium staring at 6:00 p.m. Of course, our big culminating event, the "closing ceremony" which recognizes our 8th-graders as the conclude their Easton Public Schools education. If the weather is good on 6/13 we will be down on the lower field by the pond, which is a wonderful location with room for all (just bring a lawn chair or blanket). Each grade also has a field trip and field day at the ECC to look forward to as well.
I hope you and your family enjoy a well deserved weekend before jumping into these next few busy weeks!
Sincerely,
Steve Clapp, Ed.D.
A glimpse inside of the terrific teaching and learning going on this week at HKMS!
Grade 6
While the baby chicks can be a distraction, these scientists are focused on interpreting charts and graphs. Grade 8 math teacher Mr. Crawford popped in to support their inquiry (and, of course, check on the chicks)!
Mrs. Burke's readers are writing about themes from Fever 1793 and writing compelling introductions!
Grade 7
Profe's Spanish students are describing types of food and ordering from a menu...all in the target language of course!
Seventh grade math students are reviewing samples or data and discussing whether or not the sampling method is likely to produce data that is representative.
Also, check out the new motivation posters in Mrs. Caldera's room made by Mrs. Halleran!
Grade 8
As these mathematicians prepare for the final exam, they are tackling function and slope with multiple variables! As Mr. Crawford demos the skills, he then meets with individuals, before having students work in groups. This gradual release of responsibility is a great model to show and assess student understanding and application within the same period of instruction.
Students began the work of designing their hybrid animals. After learning about the adaptations animals evolve for survival, they were randomly assigned two animals that they will combine into a new hybrid. What would a cheetah and a bat look like? What adaptation would be advantageous or disadvantageous? Over the next two weeks we will find out!
