For the Week of  4/29 - 5/3

Dear HKMS Families,

This is Annie Mohr Assistant Principal here at HKMS.  I am doing a takeover of the opening letter this week!  This past Wednesday, we celebrated School Principal Appreciation Day.  One day is not enough to celebrate our INCREDIBLE principal, Dr. Steve Clapp.  As the quote above states, leadership is about helping others to shine.  There is no one more dedicated and selfless than Dr. Clapp.  He is the first one here at the crack of dawn every morning and never misses a night event.  He jumps in where needed on a moment's notice.  On any given day, you can find him on lunch duty wiping down tables, covering classes without substitutes, taking a walk with an upset student or giving high fives at bus duty.  Just to name a few!   He leads by example often working shoulder to shoulder with students on community service projects such as building recess equipment and sanding down stumps for an outdoor seating area.  He has everyone's back and makes our school warm and inviting.

Dr. Clapp values infusing joy into learning and recognizes that life is about making meaningful connections. In only three years time, he has refurnished the cafeteria and created an outdoor eating area so students have more options for seating that promote inclusion.  He spends hours planning professional development experiences for staff that model best practices and values their input and expertise.  He believes in the goodness of each and every human being in the HKMS community and demonstrates the power of perseverance, positive energy and understanding.  The evidence of his impact can be found in the high-impact instructional strategies happening in the classrooms, in the laughter heard from the stage as kids play foosball during lunch and in the enthusiastic greeting he gives to every community member as they enter the building each morning.  Dr. Clapp's constant humble acts of service and kindness have made a DRAMATIC impact on the HKMS community.  As I stated at the beginning, one day to say "thank you" is truly not enough.

In honor of Dr. Clapp, let's follow his example and pay it forward.  Let's show our children how "we rise by lifting others" and how the expression of gratitude increases happiness for all.

Wishing you a weekend full of sunshine, joy, and rejuvenation.

Sincerely,

Annie Mohr

A glimpse inside of the terrific teaching and learning going on this week at HKMS!

Grade 6

In ILA Mrs. Burke and Mr. Pearson are challenging students to figure out why "Mrs. Burke's Answers" are wrong on the reading assessment.

Student leaders run the opening of each class period and are speaking to their peers completely in the target language.  They review how everyone is feeling as well as information about the date and weather.

Science classes will be studying the life cycle of chickens with 15 fertilized eggs arriving this week which were loaded into Mrs. Maggi's incubator.  In just a few short weeks we'll have a flock of "silkies" chirping away.  Stay tuned for updates!
