For the Week of  11/20 - 11/24

"We are never truly happy until we try to brighten the lives of others."
-Dr. Helen Keller

Dear HKMS Families,

As Dr. Keller said over a half century ago,  and we are proving with science today, humans are at our best when we make the lives of others better. This week at Keller was all about gratitude! Our annual Gratitude Assembly filled 350 hearts with joy as we all experienced the sincere sense of gratitude flowing through the cafetorium. We listened to expressions of gratitude from several staff and students and our staff band, Raisin' Helen got everybody singing along to songs like Party in the old H-K, and Sweet Home Helen Keller! Following the assembly, students collaborated with their advisory groups to decorate doors in the theme of gratitude in a winter wonderland.  You have to check out all the pictures and videos in the Happenings section below.

Our peer leaders lead a very successful drive for coats and food for St. John's Family Center and Food Pantry in Bridgeport. The pictures of Mrs. Blumenthal's fully loaded car, was a heartwarming sight indeed! Thank you to all who contributed and all who facilitated this great act of generosity.

Yesterday we announced our spring musical, which will be Finding Nemo Jr.  Tryouts will be Thursday, November  30th from 3-5pm in the cafeteria and the production will run on March 8th and 9th.   Rehearsals will run every Monday and Wednesday from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

All over our wonderful learning community, I have witnessed countless acts of giving and kindness this year.  I know that is what I am thankful for this year.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Gratefully yours,

Steven Clapp, Ed.D.

A glimpse inside of the terrific teaching and learning going on this week at HKMS!

Grade 6

A Rotation of Experiments

Mrs. Maggi's scientists are heating things up!  They have been rotating through multiple experiment stations all about heat transfer.

Grade 7

Dr. Baca's seventh grade scientists are learning about chemical compounds.  Their challenge this week was to create the best slime.  They were given an array of ingredients but no directions.  It was up to them to concoct their combination to create slime that would win the competition.  Once created, they also wrote up their scientific procedure.

Grade 8

Mr. Crawford's mathematicians were involved in a Linear Functions "mini-project" this week! Great application of this tough concept in just two days!

FPAs

Mrs. Burnham and Mrs. Tiani teamed up to teach students about healthy relationships through student-created comic strips!

The HKMS Advisory Door
