Ways to get Involved
and...Upcoming Events!
Dear HKMS Families,
I have come to firmly believe that we are at our best as human beings when we are giving of ourselves to others. There is no finer example of this than the surprise our students and staff prepared for Sara Terry's family this week. As you may know, our school counselor, Mrs. Terry has been dealing with a health crisis with her youngest daughter. While the treatments are progressing, their journey will be a long one. The process is exhausting and draining, so our community wanted to help them re-energize. During the past couple of advisory sessions all students created pieces for the #Terry Tough Pathway, made up of hand made crafts, posters, coloring pages, and well wishes. During some of our recent “brain breaks” a group of 8th graders spent their time turning those posters and coloring pages into fully laminated yard signs. Along with donations from the community the staff loaded up our cars and decorated the Terry family's yard with all the signs of encouragement, hope, and positive vibes! The positive ripples created by this work have been felt by our students, staff, and of course the entire Terry family. No matter how challenging life can be, when we can step back and help others, we can't help but feel better about our collective future! Please take a few minutes to check out all the great pictures of the process and product in the happenings section. I bet you’ll feel a bit better just knowing your child was involved in this inspirational school wide effort.
This week had many fantastic highlights in and around HKMS. From full music rehearsals, and terrific art work, to a reader’s theater and a wonderful parent coffee with the JBHS administrators, it was another thought-provoking week at HKMS. Be sure to check out all the great pictures of our students applying new learning to novel tasks. As we wrap up our state testing season, with 8th graders taking the NGSS next week, the next big assessment will be the math final exams on 6/6. There are a myriad of other end-of-year events in the "upcoming events" section, including a special to-do list for our 8th grade families.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Steve Clapp

The HKMS chorus is getting ready for the competition on Friday as well as their spring concert on June 1st!
General music students are comparing and contrasting original songs and their covers.
The daughter of our amazing school counselor, Mrs. Terry, continues to fight a courageous battle. As this journey will be long and hard, we wanted to do something to show that we are always thinking of them. The students and staff of HKMS spent time during advisory periods and lunches coloring pictures of Gigi's favorite characters such as Elmo, Moana and Baby Shark and making pinwheels with messages of support! These pictures were cut out to create collages on yard signs. We came up with the logo TERRY TOUGH! A large group of staff members showed up to Mrs. Terry's house this week and turned her lawn into an extravaganza of love. The yard signs spelled out Terry Tough. We even had an incredible donation from Balloon Whimzy of flower balloons that made it all come together. Gigi and her mom returned home from chemo to an outpouring of support. Students were so engaged and loving in their efforts to help us pull this off. The chorus classes even made recordings of themselves singing Gigi's favorite songs! This unconditional support for others is what defines the people of HKMS.
On Thursday there was a great turnout of parents who had an hour to hear from and ask questions of the JBHS administration. Head of School Dr. Almeida and APs Mr. Kellogg and Mr. Schemm were on hand to discuss transition events and answer questions about various programs and extra curricular offerings. A huge thanks to the PTO for sponsoring this great event!
Dr. Clapp celebrated a milestone birthday this week. Thanks to PTO and Alina's Cakes and Cookies, we had the PERFECT cake!

Share Your Time or Produce with Easton´s Homebound Seniors
The Easton ¨Grow-A-Row¨ program will be returning this summer and helpers are needed to make it a success. Beginning on June 20th, excess fresh produce grown in home gardens ( or purchased from local farms ) can be dropped off each Tuesday at Shaggy Coos Farm, 53 Center Road, Easton, CT from 8 am-12:00 pm. Volunteer drivers will deliver the collected food to homebound seniors in town.
Please contact Alison Witherbee [awitherbee@eastonct.gov or call (203) 268-1137] for more information.
There are several ways that Easton residents can support this initiative:
Home gardeners can sow an extra row or two of vegetable seeds, with the intention to donate the excess yield to benefit the seniors.
Non-gardeners can purchase extra produce from local farms for donation and drop it off at Shaggy Coos Farm on Tuesdays, beginning June 20th to September 12th.
Volunteer to deliver the produce on Tuesday afternoons.
