For the Week of  9/5 - 9/8

"Teachers and parents working together must be celebrated for it helps children reach their full potential."

Dear HKMS Families,

It was such a joy to see so many of you at last night's open house!  As Mrs. Mohr and I stated, “it [still] takes a village to raise [adolescent] children.”  Your participation in the open house is evidence of our enduring partnership in providing a world class education and a safe, happy, welcoming learning environment.  Thank you! For those not able to make it, we have included many pictures of the night in the “happenings” section as well as our keynote slide deck (which includes resources we referenced about brain development and our “seven strategies” for supporting adolescent development).

As we really try to make this your “one stop shop” of correspondences from the school, please be sure to scroll through the newsletter for “peeks” into classrooms, find out ways to “get involved,” and the all important “upcoming events” section.

We are heading into our first five-day week of the year, so be sure those amazing little minds rest up, recharge, and reconnect with you over a (hopefully) cooler weekend!

Wishing you all the best!

Sincerely,

Steven Clapp, Ed.D.

A glimpse inside of the terrific teaching and learning going on this week at HKMS!

Grade 6

Students are introducing themselves to their classmates in the target languages of Spanish & French.

Mrs. Maggi's young scientists are creating the "science of me" which connect scientific principles to their lives and bodies!

Grade 7

Mrs. Caldara's students working through their 1st pre-assessment (above) and her beautiful displays of student work, homework and the problem of the week (below).

The first debates of the year in 7th grade science were awesome!  Debate protocols were overseen by student leaders.

Grade 8

Mr. Macaluso is demonstrating the level of detail students must include when writing a science lab procedure.

8th grade French students are warm-up up their conversational skills in the target language by chatting about one of our students' favorite topics....food!

FPAs

PLTW students are exploring the use of robots in our world to enhance our lives such as robotic surgery and speedy deliveries.

Students are designing their art portfolio folders that they will use to gather all of their artistic creations!

Hot Yoga? With such a hot week (and no AC in the gym) Mrs. Tiani wisely chose to teach her students some challenging stretches. You know, I didn't believe Mrs. Tiani when she said  yoga would improve my posture.  I now stand corrected. :)

The Flags of HKMS!

Is your family's flag flying at HKMS?  The ceiling and walls of the HKMS cafeteria will be filled with flags that represent the various cultures, countries, and ethnicities of the entire HKMS community!  We want to be sure we have your family represented in the flags for the 2023-24 school year.  Please take 15 seconds to fill out the questionnaire here so we can update our flags to include your family.
