and...Upcoming Events!
Dear HKMS Families,
This week Mrs. Mohr and I booked ourselves into every HKMS classroom to conduct instructional rounds. Like the practice of medical rounds, instructional rounds are one way administrators calibrate their thinking, coordinate their efforts, and assess how a school is doing. Usually, rounds look at a problem of practice or through a lens. This week our focus was the “learning environment” teachers have created. The learning environment includes everything from relationships cultivated and student behaviors, to intellectual risk-taking, expectations, and routines established. As you will see in the class peeks section below, the teachers have done a wonderful job creating positive learning environments that are responsive and respectful spaces for our students to learn. In addition, we could not help but think how wonderful it would be to be an HKMS student his week, learning about some amazing topics and applying new skills. Here is a quick sample, students were:
learning about cancer sniffing dogs,
timelining the creation of the universe,
translating complex sentences in a competitive and cooperative game,
painting with yarn,
working in book clubs across disciplines,
simulating the impact of living under authoritarian power, and
8th-graders even took the PSATs! What a week!
Looking ahead, next week we have a few noteworthy events. Tuesday is walk/ride/roll to school day (rain date is 10/12). Even if you live outside walking distance, please consider either dropping your child off on Ridgedale Rd. (we’ll have a drop-off spot there) or parking at Jesse Lee Church (thank you JLC!) and joining the walk. Easton Police and HKMS staff will be out there supervising and making sure everyone is safe and having fun. On Wednesday there is no school in observance of Yom Kippur, and on Thursday 6th-graders will have an all-day Nature’s Classroom Experience right here on campus!
Looks like the weekend may be a bit soggy, I hope all the games and outdoor events still get in. Regardless, and most importantly, I hope you get more quality family time this weekend because that's what our young adolescents really need.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Steven Clapp, Ed.D.

Grade 6
In math students "can" apply multidigit decimal whole numbers, decimals, and money to "real life" scenarios!
In social studies, Mr. Bernardi is showing how useful timelines are in organizing and presenting complex events!
Grade 7
Mrs. Rose and Mr. Rogers have teamed up for an interdisciplinary approach to help students learn more about global issues and how to identify theme through fiction text book clubs.
So many awesome learning goals are happening in Ms. Mancini's math classroom! Students were rotating through stations looking for products and quotients, which only sent them further into the hunt for answers! Check out how the agenda is accessible to all!
Students is Profe Cerra's classes compete in a team competition. If they need help from a team mate on the challenge, they yell ayudame, which means "help me" in Spanish. It is an amazing game to promote team work!
Grade 8
Students in 8th grade social studies classes ran simulations this week to experience taxation without representation from colonial times.
Can you figure it out? If not just ask an 8th grader. (The answer is also at the bottom of this newsletter)
Can you use faze and phase in a sentence?
FPA
7th graders in PLTW are building models of aerospace vehicles and filming their working creations. Students are using the video editing app Movie Maker to create infomercials of different kinds of aerospace vehicles. The project requires students to research the history of the vehicles and add pictures, captions, video, and music to their Movie Maker videos.
In health this week, grade seven students debated the "Worst of the Worst" tobacco products, while 8th graders presented their public service announcements (or PSAs) on the dangers of vaping.
Do you know why the yarn did not leave the party? They were having a ball! Students are not just just "wooling" around in art this week as Mrs. G challenges them to create a yarn painting with a sea setting...pretty "knitty" if you ask me! :)
The Easton, Redding, and Region 9 School Districts acknowledge the uniqueness and varied experiences of all students, staff, families, and community members, as well as the uniqueness and experiences of people in our state, country, and the world. The HKMS "Diversity Discussion" is intended to open up conversations with your middle schooler about issues of diversity!
We are up to 42 with the edition of the Haiti and Guatemala (thanks to generous parent donations)! Check out the updated video walkthrough! What do all of these flags say to you about the diversity evident in our middle school? It's a great discussion to have with your child(ren) this weekend!
Extracurriculars
The spreadsheet below displays the 18 extracurricular activities we will offer this year. As the dates approach and the clubs "open up", teachers will create and send out notices with directions and more information. Three informational posters are included in this section.
You can also email any of the teachers listed with questions.
It was a packed house for the first meeting of the HKMS Newspaper Club. This year's editions of the Keller Courier are going to be awesome!
Keller Courier Webcast LIVE!
The HKMS morning announcements are running LIVE! You can check the recordings at our private YouTube channel linked here (also always on the HKMS Home Pace). Thanks to Mrs. Gale and the whole crew for all the news we can use!

Our 6th graders seem to have adjusted well to middle school life at Helen Keller! It’s amazing to see their enthusiasm and smiling faces as they walk through the halls of school. They are already in sync with the routines and rhythms of middle school!
The Counseling Team has been busy visiting all 6th grade ELT classrooms to introduce ourselves and explain our roles and how to access a counselor, should they need to. It has been great to get to know so many 6th grade students!
We are thrilled to report that about ⅓ of 6th graders have been involved in our transition lunch groups. These first rounds of transition groups will be ending in the next few weeks and other students will get a chance to attend if they would like to. Lunch groups give students a time to connect with peers in a small, quieter setting, playing games and just having fun! We look forward to getting to know even more students as we form our next round of lunch groups.
Our counseling office has a "chill" vibe where we host lunch groups.

Thinking about getting your middle schooler a cell phone? We strongly encourage everyone to "Wait until 8th-Grade." Before making this huge decision (that is impossible to reverse), please read and consider the "Wait until 8th" pledge below. If none of the kids have them, well then there is no issue.
If you would like your child take this bus to the library on a certain day, please send a note to HKMSmainoffice@er9.org or call (203)268-8651 You need to send this email EVERY TIME that your child will be taking that bus so that a bus note is issued to them on that day.
At HKMS we believe all students should be thriving whether performing below, at, or above grade-level standards. This section will highlight just one of the ways we support learners and/or extend their thinking.
