Ways to get Involved
and...Upcoming Events!
Dear HKMS Families,
This is the penultimate edition of the 2022-23 school year! Over the course of the year we have shared events ranging from pancakes and spaghetti to helicopters and career paths. We have covered students debating, designing and building, writing and calculating. This week is no different! Math final exams, an 8th grade visit to JBHS, a visit from 5th graders, a picnic, and an on-campus field trip…what a week!
As we head into the final stretch, there are a few important reminders I’d like to highlight.
Math finals were this week and students will be getting the results which will also be posted on Powerschool as soon as possible. Math placements are being determined for next year. If you do not hear from your child’s math teacher, that means they are staying “on track” (see math pathways linked here). If your child math class pathway is changing, you will hear from your child’s teacher by next Friday.
We are still waiting on permission slips from a number of families , specifically for the full school field day and for the 8th grade trip to Brownstone. We have included all permission slips in section right below this message called “permission slip central.” Please review and be sure you have given your child permission to attend the applicable events.
Lockers will be cleaned out next week and students will be bringing home various portfolios, supplies, and clothing. Our lost and found is bursting. Please encourage your child to check it or stop by any day next week to retrieve items. Anything left behind after next Friday will be donated to a local charity.
Summer reading assignments are posted in this newsletter. The ILA teachers will be reviewing expectations with students before the last day.
Summer math assignments are posted below for all HKMS students. Also posted below is the JBHS summer reading and math summer work for rising freshmen.
IMPORTANT: All students going into seventh grade next year need to have a physical and vaccine update between 6/22/22 and 7/31/23. If your sixth grader has had this appointment, please submit the paperwork to our nurse Mrs. Grega. Students without this update will not be allowed to start school in the fall until the exam and updates are completed and submitted to our nurse. Please see the full letter below from Mrs. Grega.
Thank you for your attention to these important “end of year” notifications. Next week is another busy one with trips to the Easton Public Library, Field day and culminating with our “closing ceremony” for our eighth graders!
Please note: There will not be an updated newsletter next Friday. We will capture all the joy and celebration of our last week, Field Day, and our Closing Ceremony then we will send the final newsletter of the year on Monday, June 19th.
Hoping you all have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
Steve Clapp

Grade 6
Look how much the baby chicks have grown! They are surrounded by love and LOTS of attention!
Grade 7
7th graders spent the day in the beautiful outdoors particpating in many team building challenges. This program was run by an organization called Mountain Workshop. Mountain Workshop was founded in 1979 to develop and facilitate experiential learning and outdoor education programs that act as catalysts for personal growth and increased resilience, and to illuminate the value of diversity. The year end Field Day with Mountain Workshop helps strengthen the relationships between students to last all summer.
In seventh grade social studies classes, students have created games and activities to test their knowledge of EVERYTHING they learned in 7th grade. This game included questions about proportions, French verbs and states of matter!
One of our 7th grade scientists did an outstanding job teaching the class all about her invention to save an ecosystem. She was knowledgeable and prepared.
Grade 8
Barlow's weekly newscast produced a special orientation episode for our 8th-graders!
An awesome time was had by all the the 8th Grade Twilight Picnic planned by the 8th Grade Council. The Big Green Pizza truck and the generous donations from parents meant that everyone was well fed!

FIRST one through the door!
It was fantastic to have our soon-to-be 6th graders walking the halls of HKMS today. They visited each 6th grade classroom where they hear presentations and advice from current sixth graders. They were given a full tour of our school by the counseling staff as well as enjoyed musical performance by the orchestra, band and chorus. They are ready!!

Share Your Time or Produce with Easton´s Homebound Seniors
The Easton ¨Grow-A-Row¨ program will be returning this summer and helpers are needed to make it a success. Beginning on June 20th, excess fresh produce grown in home gardens ( or purchased from local farms ) can be dropped off each Tuesday at Shaggy Coos Farm, 53 Center Road, Easton, CT from 8 am-12:00 pm. Volunteer drivers will deliver the collected food to homebound seniors in town.
Please contact Alison Witherbee [awitherbee@eastonct.gov or call (203) 268-1137] for more information.
There are several ways that Easton residents can support this initiative:
Home gardeners can sow an extra row or two of vegetable seeds, with the intention to donate the excess yield to benefit the seniors.
Non-gardeners can purchase extra produce from local farms for donation and drop it off at Shaggy Coos Farm on Tuesdays, beginning June 20th to September 12th.
Volunteer to deliver the produce on Tuesday afternoons.
