Dear HKMS Families,
Think of a clean glass of water that has a scoop of dirt placed in it. To purify the water we could pick each piece of dirt, until it is clean enough to drink. Alternatively, we could flood the cup with so much clean water that the dirt is flushed out and the water is purified. If we think of a school's climate like that glass of water, it does not take much to spoil the contents. A hurtful comment, an unkind push, using inappropriate language, not being part of the group text, or being "funny" at another's expense, can be our proverbial scoop of dirt. When this happen, we address each event and do our best to pick out every little piece of dirt. But over the course of several months there is some residual grime left behind from our cleanup efforts. So, for the next month we are going to FLOOD the system with ultra-positive vibes! From our school musical kicking off tonight to dozens of different Mikey's Madness events coming next month, and our culminating 60th Anniversary Rededication Ceremony on 3/28! Our staff worked together to create a guiding slogan for our month filled with goodness...
"HKMS: 60 Years of Love and Learning"
Mikey's Madness is a month long series of student-developed events that helps raise money for Mikey's Way, a charity that was created by one of our alumnus which provides electronics for pediatric cancer patients. On Monday morning we will officially launch Mikey's Madness on with announcements on all the various events that support this fundraisers. We will have a Mikey's Madness section with updates and events next week and each week of our month of madness.

These French speakers had a chance to order off a student-developed Parisian menu, as students "dined" in a French cafe. From concept and location, to items and cost, students created and "served" their peers. While bein served, students had a chance to talk to each other about whatever they wanted, as long as they stayed in the target language.
Bon appétit!
In 7th Grade Social Studies students were introduced to The Question Formulation Technique. They worked in small groups to develop their own questions about important events during The Cultural Revolution in China. They will use this technique in an upcoming research project on China. Research shows that when students develop their own question, they demonstrate more engagement and a deeper understanding of the content.
Grade Eight
