For the Week of  2/12 - 2/16

"Progress isn't always evident at first glance. While quick wins might boost morale, enduring success demands sustained effort and commitment. Remember, genuine growth often operates silently behind the scenes."
-Luke Joyce

Dear HKMS Families,

With a blanket of snow covering the fields, farms, and forests of Easton, it is difficult to observe the growth that is happing just below the surface.  What is true of flora for farmers is often true of students for educators.  My friends who teach at the elementary level often proudly declare they "plant the seeds" while high school and college educators are busy "reaping the fruit" of the whole education system. Much of the growth we see at the end a school career is not as easy to observe in during the middle school years.

Being at the midpoint of the year is also a reflection point for all educators.  We often write mid-year reflections, synthesize and analyze five-months of student data, and report to our superiors about how our students are growing and how we are progressing on our professional goals.  As I meet with teachers and review their data, I am blown away by how much growth is occurring.  Sure we are not planting seeds and the fruit is not ready to be picked but we are seeing growth, it's just growth occurring under the surface.  I believe a world-class middle school should be focused on strengthening the roots.    Much like the crops, trees, and flowers that will soon emerge from the frost, which need the "long middle" between planting and harvesting to solidify their roots, so too will our students need the time and nutrients to solidify their foundation.

With the coming week off, I challenge you to look "under the surface" and see your child's roots growing strong. Use this newsletter, look at the topics being covered in the "Classroom Peeks" section (this week and weeks past) and ask your child to show you how to convert fractions to decimals to percents, to use the quadratic equation, or read a piece of their writing to you. Listen to them play a song, or check out a piece of their art, or debate a topic they are learning in social studies. You will be impressed.  They are growing, it's just under the surface and takes a bit of work to reveal.  In the blink of an eye, they will be off harvesting the rewards of a great education, so now is the time to help us strengthen those roots.

What a week it was at HKMS! Air cannon championships, a snow day, a Valentine's Day pink out, and all the Swifties here tell me Taylor's boyfriend won some big game!

Wishing you and your family a wonderful week off together!

Sincerely,

Steven Clapp, Ed.D.

A glimpse inside of the terrific teaching and learning going on this week at HKMS!

Grade 6

Sixth grade ILA students are launching their non-fiction unit.  Mr. Pearson is modeling how to evaluate and preview a non-fiction text prior to reading it.  Students were also given time to check out many options and select three books of their choice to read during this unit.

Check out the amazing final projects from the science/social studies joint project about the Amazon Rainforest.  You may recall that in social studies, students studied deforestation and its effects on the infrastructure, economy and people of the area.  While in science, students researched the impact that the Amazon Rainforest has on climates around the earth.  Project presentations happened this week.

Grade 7

Mrs. Caldera's mathematicians are learning about and practicing how to multiply and divide integers!

Dr. Baca's 7th grade scientists are performing labs that show the movement of glucose across a membrane.  This will help them to explore how certain particles move through the intestine and are absorbed.

Grade 8

Mr. Crawford's students took over instruction this week as students prepared and presented several new topics to their peers.  Videos, slide-decks, and demos were all designed and delivered by our students!

AIR CANNON FINALS!

Check out all the videos of the final competitions..in the end our champs knocked down 6 cups from 20 feet away!

A group of Profe Cerra's 8th grade Spanish students planned and ran a lesson with the preschool students at the Easton Community Center this week.  To quote one of the preschool teachers, "I just really adored the activity you chose with the kids---the Molly Lou Mellon book (in both English and Spanish) were perfect & of course the message of loving yourself no matter what is always brilliant!"

FPAs

Teams of 8th grade students competed in a conflict resolution escape room during  health class this week.

In PLTW students are designing, building, and coding robots that will do their bidding. One of the robots actually got arrested...it was charged with battery!

#RandomActsOfKindnessDay

by The HKMS Counseling Team

Dominika Pelligrini, Nick Willett, Bailey Keehan, & Kristin Burnham

Each year on February 17th, National Random Acts of Kindness Day grows in popularity. Everyone needs a little kindness sometimes, and we never know when to expect it. The goal of Random Act of Kindness Week is to improve schools, the workplace, and the community through kindness. Being kind offers benefits for you, too!

Random Acts of Kindness Day encourages people to think about ways they can make a positive impact on their communities. If you’re wondering how to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day, here are 10 ideas for random acts of kindness that you can do for the benefit of those around you.

Your gesture doesn’t have to be big or elaborate. Sometimes, the simplest acts of kindness can have the greatest impact.

Events, activites, and other occurrences that happened at HKMS this week outside of the classroom.

It was a terrific Valentine's Day pink out this year!

HKMS Debate Team

A note from "Coach" D'Agostino:

"They did great! This was our first time competing at the open level (as opposed to the novice level). They are really progressing by leaps and bounds--from novices learning the ropes at the October competition to skilled debaters ready for open-level competition in February. I am so proud of them!"
