For the Week of  2/26 - 3/1

“It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” -Charles Dickens

Dear HKMS Families,

Today certainly felt like the March day Mr. Dickens was describing in Great Expectations!  As we turn the calendar to March and look forward to spring (just 18 days away!), we have numerous updates on events and other end-of-the-year dates and reminders.  Some of the most important that were finalized this week are:

As each week progresses, more events will be finalized, so please pay attention to this newsletter and the "upcoming events" section.

Our last week of February was another outstanding one as students tackled challenging assignments, played 4 way volleyball, unpacked the "Greek Miracle," applied Latin root words to help understand new vocabulary words, and got organized in advisory.  You can check it all out and more in this week's newsletter.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Steven Clapp, Ed.D.

A glimpse inside of the terrific teaching and learning going on this week at HKMS!

Grade 6

Mr. Bernardi's historians are continuing to understand the remarkable accomplishment of the Ancient Greek civilization. From the roots of modern medicine and democracy, to mathematics and architecture, this golden age of Greece is often called the "Greek Miracle."

Our young scientists have designed their own experiments to investigate radiation and the earth's surfaces.  Their essential question is, "Do different surfaces affect the absorption and reflection of radiation?"  Throughout their experiments, students wrote their wonderings and things that they noticed.  These were reviewed and discussed in a class circle discussion.  Students made incredible connections between their recent rainforest projects and the discoveries during this lab.

Grade 7

Back to basics in Mr. Rogers' neighborhood as students learned and applied 10-Latin roots to new vocabulary, while also studying the parts of speech in this week's mini-grammar unit.  A Kahoot! to finish off the day was a great celebration of new learning!

One of the defining characteristics of middle schoolers is their desire to socialize.  Mrs. Rose caplitzed on this disposition by having her class use a "conver-station protocol" which rotates students into several groups to discuss how the past impact the present and future.

Grade 8

Today's quizzes on exponential functions (in algebra class) and volume, area, etc. (in math 8) was a tough ones and all tools (rulers, calculators, whiteboards, computers, and Mr. Crawford too) were needed to successfully navigate the challenging problems students tackled! The average was 92% between the classes!

Mr. Jockers' writers are composing their own books of IF...THEN scenarios.  These books are based off of the non-fiction books that they just finished reading.

What is 4-way volleyball? Only the best game ever! 4 teams compete against each other in a cross-sectioned quadrant court.  Check out the video of a great rally.  While game play was going on, students tested their flexibility at the sit and reach stations.

Art classes are not just about creating beautiful pieces, but are also about reflecting on new skills and learning.  Mrs. G held classes in the library this week to create their "virtual art gallery" and used a nifty check-in reflection tool!

Orchestra students practicing new pieces for the spring concert and earning badges along the way!  There is a year-long contest underway!  Students are challenged to perform pieces in front of their peers, receive feedback and aim for a score 90% on SMart Music.  When they do this, they are able to move their names to a higher tier of the display!

Sixth grade health students are creating venn diagrams comparing macronutrients and micronutrients.  They are also using a chart system to check in on their learning progress throughout the class period.

Great minds think (and apparently dress) alike. Mr. Dolecki and Mr. Fearn inadvertently "twinning" this week!

Another great advisory week as teachers and students connected through games, organization tips, and the PIP project!

Events, activites, and other occurrences that happened at HKMS this week outside of the classroom.
