Dear HKMS Families,
We jumped out of holiday mode and into a stretch of three five-day weeks between Thanksgiving and winter break. While everyone loves a good holiday or snow day, the five-day week results in better attendance, less misbehaviors, and better teaching and learning! This is one of the most productive, challenging, and exciting times of the year. Trimester one ended last week and report cards will be ready for your inspection Monday. We will send a note out when they are available.
There is lots going on! I want to briefly highlight the following:
Your breakfast plans for tomorrow morning are all set. For just $5 you receive a full pancake breakfast, served by our own 8th-graders with all the fixings. Please join us for the 49th year of this tradition between 8:00 - 11:00 am! All proceeds go to support 8th-grade end of the year activities trips.
The 8th grade council has initiated their annual Toy Drive for young students at the Curiale School in Bridgeport. The flyer in happenings will show the joy this drive brings to those students. However, the real gift is to the 8th graders who deliver the toys and spend time the youngsters. It's a very moving experience; many feel it is the best experience of their middle school years. Please send in new and unwrapped toys for ages 5-10 by December 16th. Our 8th graders will be hand wrapping every toy!! You can get a jump start by bringing your donations to the pancake breakfast tomorrow!
Our homework club started this past week. If you are battling with your middle schooler over homework, consider sending them to HW club every Thursday from 3:00 - 4:00 pm. Our writing specialist will help them organize and complete any missing assignments. No need to sign up, but if you'd like, you can let Mrs. Aponte know to expect your child. You can reach her at: daponte@er9.org.
You can see info about all of this and so much more in this week's newsletter.
Hoping you all have a restful and restorative weekend!
Sincerely,
Steve Clapp, Ed.D.
Grade Six
The skill of debate is an essential one that students in social studies are developing. In this debate students argued whether or not violence was unavoidable when cultures clashed during the age of exploration.
After mastering some meteorology basics, these scientists tried to predict what caused a massive hail storm to occur.
Grade Seven
Mrs. Caldara's mathematicians worked on various equation puzzles using a "Building Thinking Classrooms" (or BTC) model. In this case random groupings of three students worked on vertical white boards as they collaborate, share, and construct unique solutions to highly engaging problems.
These scientists are developing Meals Ready to Eat (or MREs). Students are tasked with making a nutritious and appealing MRE that costs less then $13 per unit. On this day students pitched their concept to a peer to provide and receive feedback. That's so Baca!
Grade Eight
Mr. de St. Croix uses a doc camera to demonstrate how to graph out the rate (speed/time) for these budding physics scholars.
Students in Mr. Jockers' classes work on the knowledge of the parts of speech by completing mad libs as a full class.
FPA
Sixth grade percussionists, seen here doing an independent study in preparation for their featured concert performance (which will be on 1/23/25)!
Mr. Fearn is getting to know his new T2 students as they circle up and talk about engineering.
Monday Morning Meeting
Dr. Baca and Mrs. Terry's Monday Morning group kept the good Thanksgiving vibes going by having students reflect on what they're grateful for, today and everyday!
Ms. Haug is a licensed social worker who will be covering Mrs. Keehan's upcoming maternity leave!
Ms. Haug grew up in Redding and graduated from Barlow. She obtained her BA from WestConn and will attain her masters in Master of Social Work, Clinical Social Work, from Southern CT State this spring.
We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Haug to the Keller family. If your child works with Mrs. Keehan, please expect Ms. Haug to reach out and introduce herself to you and your child!
