Dear HKMS Families,
The power of gratitude is not just a feel good concept, it is deeply rooted in science and psychology. When you experience gratitude your brain releases dopamine and serotonin, neurotransmitters that are associated with pleasure, happiness, and rewards. This feedback loop reinforces the actions that lead to the feeling that encourages humans to repeat the behaviors. Evidence also shows that gratitude lessens the stress we put on our prefrontal cortex, thereby strengthening our executive functioning abilities (Fox, Kaplan, Damasio, Damasio, 2015, link here). Studies show that gratitude enhances connectivity in brain regions associated with social bonding, empathy, and emotional regulation, leading to stronger relationships and improved mental health (Mills, B, 2021, link here). The psychological effects are also profound. From reducing stress, boosts to resilience, relationships, physical health, and happiness are all associated with experiences of gratitude (Chowdhury, 2019, link here). With all the benefits it's almost surprising we don’t stop to give thanks but once a year. Maybe that's why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Well, the food helps too. :)
This year I will raise my glass and give thanks to the teachers and staff of HKMS! They are a consummate group of dedicated, hard working, and caring professionals that I have the pleasure of learning alongside everyday. Having worked in a few pretty good schools, I know how lucky we are to have such a tremendous staff. Every day, they go above-and-beyond to create a nurturing and engaging learning environments where our children can thrive. They inspire curiosity, ignite imaginations, and foster a love of learning that will stay with your children for a lifetime. Please join me in giving them our thanks this holiday.
Not only did we just make it to our first holiday vacation, we also finished the first trimester of the year today. Report cards will be assembled and finalized next week and shared with you on Monday 12/9.
I hope you all enjoy this special edition of our newsletter full of gratitude, appreciation, PJs, and newly decorated doors!
From my family to yours I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, a restful break from work, and a holiday season filled with joy, relaxation, and appreciation!
Sincerely,
Steve Clapp, Ed.D.
