"What's the best predictor of your grades in college? Not SAT scores, HS GPA, or your study time & habits. It's whether you show up. Attendance is one of the best predictors of academic performance. Same goes for any pursuit. Showing up is the most important part of performing." - Steve Magness
Dear HKMS Families,
Steve Magness is a world class expert on performance. From NCAA teams to Olympians and athletes from every major professional sports league, he has coached the most elite in the world on how humans can tap into their full potential. His number one tip for all students, athletes, elite military units, fortune 500 executives is to just show up. It makes a ton of sense, if you don't practice, or compete how can you improve or measure your progress? The same, of course, goes for school!
Since the pandemic chronic absenteeism nation-wide has gone through the roof. Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing more than 10% of school (for us, that's 18 days). We also have to consider how many classes a student misses. For example, a student who is fully absent 10 times and is late for period one 8 times would be chronically absent for that class. This becomes even more important in high school where "seat time" is calculated and students may not pass a class based on attendance alone. Check out the article embedded below this message (Chronic Absenteeism Is a Serious Issue: Teachers Weigh In) for more info, trends, and impact of chronic absenteeism.
Just being here is more than half the battle, and I know for some of you it is a daily battle to get your middle schooler here. We are here to help! Our counseling and administration teams are well versed in school avoidance and school refusal. If you are battling getting moving in the morning with your middle schooler, we do not want you to take this on without any help. Remember our 3-word mantra this year, NEVER WORRY ALONE. Please reach out to us if this is happening. We need your help to get here on time, and we would love to help you get your child here every single day.
In the coming weeks we will be sending out some additional information about attendance including a new attendance letter. This letter will be sent to you every 5 absences reminding you of both the legal requirements for attendance and the benefits of just being here.
Students were certainly attentive on this very productive five-day week. I hope you can take a few minutes to attend to this week's newsletter.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!
Steve Clapp, Ed.D.
Grade Six
These pictures show some of the different challenges from the Fraction Operations Escape Room that 6th graders have been tackling in Math Workshop. Through these activities, students are reviewing adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and mixed numbers in preparation for an upcoming test.
The Northern Triangle is a geographic region in southern Central America made up of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. These young historians are using their understanding of these turbulent countries by completing a cause and effect chart.
Grade Seven
These social scientists are Kohooting content studied on Ancient and Modern China. They have clearly learned a lot as they destroyed Dr. Clapp who came in 15th out of 19 players.
Diagnosing the digestive issues of patients by studying the endoscopic system is the job of Dr. Baca's scientists (and medical students too)!
Grade Eight
After a read aloud from How They Croaked, Mr. Jockers' students complete a 5 Ws+How? analysis. This "whole class" activity models similar "small group" book club analysis they are completing.
By analyzing the actions of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the difference between Civil Rights, Civil Liberties, and where they are codified in the Constitution is the work of our social studies scholars. Students then went on to try to address the post-boycott days asking students to answer the following:
What advice do I give to all of those people who will return to riding the newly-integrated buses of Montgomery tomorrow?
A compelling study of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, including analysis of Dr. King's nonviolent approach, a deeper understanding of civil rights and civil liberties, primary source readings, with lots of discussion and debate show the depth of understanding students are expected to demonstrate in the second half of the year in social studies.
Mr. Fred Barna, JBHS math teacher, was on site this week to walk students though all the various math and other course options for our rising freshman class. He also showed the difference between test questions in grade level, advance, and honors classes. His theme, know yourself as a learner, and find balance and flow in your studies and extracurriculars. Don't take on so much you end up broken.
FPA
8th graders enjoy sitting by the "fire" as they knit in Art class this week!
We're in a pickle now! A Pickleball that is! As the "nets" unit continues, these pickleball players are always returning for more. 😆
The full grade 6 band and the full HKMS chorus held practices this week in preparation of upcoming concerts.

Monday Morning Meeting
Self-Actualization is the very top of the human needs pyramid (see Maslow, 1943). It is not very often we have the chance to witness someone “self actualize” in middle school and that may very well be happening in grade 7 mathematics over the next 3 months.
Next week, our amazing intern Ms. Maddie Feraca, takes the next step in realizing her dream of becoming a math teacher as she starts her student teaching experience here at HKMS. As you may know to become a certified public school teacher in Connecticut, candidates must take on a full teaching load for a stretch of 10-15 weeks (depending on university, subject area, and grade level), while working under the supervision of a master teacher. As Ms. Feraca is wrapping up her masters degree at SHU, it's time for her to jump into her student teaching experience.
Ms. Feraca will be under the tutelage of Mrs. Caldera as she takes the helm of grade 7 mathematics starting with a few classes next week. Please join the whole HKMS staff as we wish her the best of luck as she takes this huge step in her journey to self-fulfillment!
The AMC 8 math competition is coming soon! This is your last chance to sign up to participate. It will be held on Monday, January 27th, during school. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 allows middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers.
For more information regarding the AMC 8 at HKMS please click on the link to find out more and to fill out the form to participate.
Please make sure you have reviewed the information about the high school scheduling and transition plans for the upcoming weeks in the letter linked below.
