Dear HKMS Families,
After nearly three years of dodging it, the coronavirus finally caught me this week. Despite being fully vaccinated, boosted, and very careful with handwashing, and other mitigations, this current variant seems to be even more contagious. Fortunately, the symptoms tapered over the week and I am feeling better going into the weekend, but the symptoms hit hard early in the week. For the last few weeks, we have run Nurse’s Nook in this newsletter describing “a triple-threat pandemic” with RSV, Flu, and Covid all surging. Please be sure to do what you can to protect yourself and your family and if symptoms creep up, we have home tests for everyone at school, just ask Nurse Grega (sgrega@er9.org).
I want to send a huge note of appreciation to our amazing assistant principal, Mrs. Annie Mohr, who served as the sole in-person building leader this week. For those who know Annie well, she throws herself into countless projects and initiatives at HKMS. She sits on several key committees, leads our school climate work, oversees substitutes, handles nearly all of the behavior concerns that emerge, and does it all with a contagious smile. She is a talented educational leader, a trusted teacher-coach, and an avid student advocate. It pained me to leave the school this week, but I knew everyone was in her highly capable hands. We don't say it enough, we are lucky to have you as a leader, Mrs. Mohr!
We were also short-staffed in the office this week and Mrs. Cahalan stepped up big time! She not only added hours and responsibilities to her days, she also ensured the trimester grades were all entered correctly so report cards can go out to families on time! Thank you Sue for all the “above and beyond” this week, and every week really!
Speaking of report cards, they are available as of 3:00 PM today. You can access them through the HKMS home page or you can follow the link here. If you have not accessed the portal or forget, we have added full instructions to the "Happenings" section below. Here are a few “tips from the trenches” when discussing report card grades and comments with your middle schooler:
Focus on growth, what they have learned, not what points or marks they did not achieve. For years now we know intelligence and academic performance are not “fixed” but are capable of great growth if properly supported and nourished. Nothing kills a growth mindset more than, “Why didn't you get a better grade in that class?” Instead try, "If you are not pleased with that grade, what can you do to improve it next trimester?"
Reflect on their performance with them. Ask them what habits, practices, and routines are responsible for their grades (good or bad) and how can you continue to improve them or reduce them for even greater success.
Discuss and set goals. If your child performed above expectations, ask how they can keep the momentum up. Have them set goals to maintain or even increase performance next trimester. If below expectations, focus on one or two areas they feel could really help them improve. Setting goals that try to change everything are bound to fail, often focusing on one habit or routine can make a big difference.
Be proud of them, and make sure they are proud of themselves. Middle school is challenging, academically, socially, and emotionally. Focus on their successes and while they seek your approval it is even more important they are internally responsible for the work they have done.
Any concerns should be brought to the teacher's attention. Our educators are top-notch. They are here to help and know what is or is not working for your child.
I want to end with a big plug for the ELF auction going on right now. The link is here and there is a flyer below in the “Get Involved” section. ELF supports a myriad of innovative ideas that we want to trial here at HKMS, and the auction features experiences you can get nowhere else! Few other towns have such a dedicated organization, please do what you can to support their work by getting involved in the winter auction.
Wishing you all a healthy and relaxing weekend.
Sincerely,
Steven Clapp, Ed.D.

Grade 6
In social studies, students are learning about the complicated and dramatic elements of the conflicts between Cortes and Aztecs and Pizarro and the Inca. As they learn about and discuss the details, they are organizing the information in their notes.
¡Tocado y hundido! 6th-grade Spanish students playing Batalla Naval (aka Battleship!) to practice Spanish numbers.
Grade 7
We love this seasonal poem that's decorating Dr. Baca's door!
Ms. Mancini's workstations include working on formative assessments, finishing notes, task cards, practice sheets, and homework! This lesson early in the week is a great example of how a teacher can differentiate the process and time students need to successfully complete all tasks and thrive!
Mrs. Rose's SS classes are exploring the vast geography and culture of China by creating interactive maps. Beyond the headlines in the news, we often overlook the beautiful tropical jungles, immense mountain ranges, and deserts that encompass the world's second-largest country by land mass!
Grade 8
8th grade Spanish students in Profe Cerra's classes are creating their own board games. They are filling each square with challenges to test their knowledge of clothing vocabulary, the preterite tense as well as direct object pronouns.
It's the TOURNAMENT OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS in 8th-grade social studies classes. Student pairs have each been assigned an amendment from the Bill of Rights. They are preparing for the tournament debate to argue why their amendment is the most important one. Stay tuned next week for tournament results!
FPA
A new trimester of health has begun!
8th-grade students in the morning health class set norms together to establish their learning environment for the trimester. Students are also doing a deep dive with the Habits of Success rubric and setting personal goals.
It's badminton time in PE! Does anyone know why badminton players are so loud?
Because they are always making a RACKET!

Dear HKMS families,
On behalf of the HKMS 8th Grade Council, we would like to inform you of a Toy Drive we are hosting for children and families in need. Over the last several years (with a two-year break during COVID), the Easton community has donated thousands of toys for students that are less fortunate during the holiday season. Without the toys donated by you, some of these students may not have a gift to open up during this time of year. You have the ability to really impact a lot of young lives and bring joy to others. This year we have set a goal to collect over 300 toys and will have 8th grade students deliver them to the James J. Curiale School in Bridgeport on Wednesday, December 21st. We need all of your help in order to reach this goal.
We need new and unwrapped toys for students in kindergarten through fourth grade. The children range in age from 5-10. Some suggested toy donations include, basketballs, footballs, action figures, Legos, Barbie or crafts. No books, stuffed animals, or toys that require batteries please, unless batteries are supplied. When students bring in toys, they will deliver them to the boxes located outside the media center or in the front entryway. Toys can also be dropped off to Ms. Montaine (room 217) or Mr. Bernardi (room 202).
The spots for the field trip will be filled by 8th graders based on their attendance to this point in 8th grade council, and a lottery system tied to donations of wrapping paper, and days spent after school wrapping the presents. Eighth grade students can sign up for wrapping presents by following the link posted on the 8th Grade Council Google Classroom and filling out the electronic form.
The drive continues through December 19th.
On behalf of the HKMS 8th Grade Class Council, we thank you in advance for your support and generosity. We are very motivated to reach our goal of 300 toys to brighten the holidays for the students of the James J. Curiale School in Bridgeport . We could not do it without you. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Erin Montaine & Jeff Bernardi

Did you know that our amazing 7th-grade math teacher provides extra help, tutoring, and support to ANY child who shows up to Homework Club (every Wednesday from 3:00 - 4:00, in the library)?!?! I bet you didn't because no one showed up last week! People pay $100s/hr. for tutors with less experience, expertise, and know-how! All you have to do is sign your child up here and your child gets a free hour of help every week on any subject!
Lost and Found is FULL!
Are there any of your child's items in this picture? The L&F is full of instruments with no names, water bottles, notebooks, sweatshirts, and lunch boxes. All will get donated on 12/22. Feel free to come by and check it out, or better yet, send your child to retrieve the item. The L&F is located in the cafeteria.
