Dear HKMS Families,
As we approach the end of the school year, we want to ensure that the valuable learning and skills our students have gained are reinforced over the summer. To that end, we are excited to share our summer math, reading, and the new "Let Grow Summer Experience" assignments, which can be found in this newsletter under this opening letter.
While the math and reading assignments will be familiar, the "Let Grow Summer Experience" is a new initiative designed to encourage students to engage in activities away from screens. We want to inspire students to embrace independence through activities such as building a fort, going on a bike ride, fishing, or even growing their own food. A list of over 120 potential adventures is available, and students are also encouraged to develop their own screen-free ideas.
A key component of this experience is the creation of a summer "archive." This can be a journal, scrapbook, podcast, short film, or any other creative format that documents their adventures. These archives will be shared within their homeroom and PE classes upon their return to school.
Math, ILA, and Health/PE teachers will review these assignments with students before the end of the school year to answer any questions. The assignments will remain on this newsletter throughout the summer and are also available on our website at https://hkms.er9.org/81933_2 under "Students" and "Summer Assignments."
Upcoming Events:
Please note the following important events for next week:
Grade 8 Closing Ceremony: Wednesday, June 11th at 6:00 PM on the "pond field." All are welcome. Please bring blankets and chairs. Water and sunscreen are also recommended. (Set up after 3:00 PM, please).
6th and 8th Grade Field Trips: Permission slips for next week's trips are due as soon as possible.
Field Day: Our final day of school, June 16th, will be a minimum day with dismissal at 12:50 PM, and will include Field Day at the ECC. A permission slip will be sent home on Monday.
We had another wonderful week at HKMS, highlighted by our impressive instrumental and choral concerts. Videos of both performances are available in the "Classroom Peeks" section.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Steve Clapp, Ed.D.
NOTE: We will send out the final newsletter of the 2025-26 school year on Monday 6/16 which will include next week as well as field day.
Summer is the perfect time to let our kids spread their wings and try some independent challenges! Please read through the assignment in the link here. Student will be expected to share one of the "Capture the Growth" projects (or one of their own ideas) found on p.6.
Grade Six
Microscope skills are being taught in sixth-grade science this week. Students learned how to change magnification, adjust lighting, and draw what they see. These classic skills are never dull and are still the best way for scientists to observe and record the smallest of particles!
All 6th grade students took a short field trip today to the Easton Public Library. They learned more about the programs that the library has to offer and many student signed up for library cards!
Grade Seven
How do you keep 7th graders engaged with just about a week left in the school year? Let them dissect stuff!! Dr. Baca's scientists conducted the annual frog dissection which brought both joy and tears, and a lot of learning!!
Being both visually and verbally bold, the blackout poetry unit in ILA is one of the most compelling units of the school year!
Grade Eight
Mrs. Mohr and Mr. D reviewed the "Closing Ceremony" overview and procedures with all 8th graders this morning. The slide above covers the most important points.
Mr. D'Agostino's social scientists dug into their own family history to uncover their family's immigration story. Students researched the "push and pull factors" that propelled one of their ancestors to our country and presented their findings to small groups of classmates.
FPA
The weather was PERFECT for this week's outdoor instrumental concert!!
The Chorus concert was a hit, and full of hits from the 1960s! Check out the full video and a bonus video of the Lake Compounce competition!
The HKMS school climate committee, comprised of students, staff and parents, held their final meeting of the year this week. They reviewed data collected from the spring check-in as well as debriefed about the student seminars and the listening sessions for the Power of Words Podcast. The committee drafted plans to keep the momentum of this important work going in the fall based on their work this year. Mrs. Mohr shared her heartfelt gratitude for all of the committee participants for giving of their time for this vital work.
The HKMS Garden Club's Strawberries are out and delicious!
