Learning content: We use different comprehension strategies to improve our understanding of texts we read

Our book this week is a type of Biography about a famous artist, although some of her paintings are a little unusual! (Click on the image below, and the click on the little icon in the top right hand corner to scroll through a number of the artists' paintings).

You will now read the book Frida Kahlo.

Learning content: Learn the meaning of new words, which improves our understanding of texts and so that we can eventually use these words in our own writing.

Ambition Someone who has ambition has a dream or a goal that they wish to achieve in life.

Sketch To sketch something means to make a quick drawing, not necessarily including all the details.

Original Something that is original has not been done or seen before, this is the first time.

Decorated Something that has been decorated has had work done on it to make it look more attractive.

Learning Intention: Team up a fascinating fact with one or Sizzling Start techniques to create an engaging introduction for an information report.

Sizzling Starts with Informative Writing

What makes a great informative introduction?

Have a look and compare these before and after examples of informative introductions:

1. Your teacher will read through them

2. Turn and talk with a partner about what you think the writer did to change these starts to make them sizzle

3. Discuss with the class what techniques you think the writer used to make the starts sizzle

After you have finished discussing what made the starts sizzle, have a look at what techniques were used to change them:

Have a go at playing the game below and notice what happens.

Hospital tag:

- Choose 2 taggers who are the doctors.

- The rest of the class are patients. If a patient is tagged they need to hold that area with one of their hands. The next time they are tagged they need to hold that area with the second hand.

-The third time they are tagged they need to hop on one leg.

- The fourth time they are tagged they become another doctor.
