Presenting Content

Update: See What You're Presenting

You can now simultaneously see other participants and what you present on-screen. Point to your presentation feed to:

  • Unpin your presentation to view it as a tile so you can see additional participants.

  • Mute any audio in your presentation.

  • Remove a presentation from a meeting when someone joins only to present.

You can't interact with presentation content from the meeting window. You can change slides or scroll through the document from the window you present.

Tip: For better presentations and to avoid mirroring, you should share your content from a different tab (strongly recommended) or window than the meeting window. If you need to share your entire screen, move your presentation to a different monitor if possible.

Update: Change Your Self-View

If you’re in a meeting with one person, your self-view automatically shows as a floating picture next to the other participant. If someone else joins or a presentation is added, your self-view is automatically added to the grid. In both cases, you can switch between the floating picture and the grid. Your choice is saved for future meetings.

  • Point to your self-view to pin or unpin yourself, switch from a floating picture to tile view, or minimize your video feed from your screen.

  • In picture-in-picture mode, you can drag the corners of your self-view to change its size or drag your self-view to any of the four corners of your meeting window.

Important: If you minimize your video feed, it only applies to your view.

  • In some cases, your self-view could appear with gray bars at the top and bottom to show you everything your camera sees. Other participants might see a cropped version of your video feed.

When presenting content during a Google Meet, you should first consider which option is best for your presentation.

A pop-up box will appear based on what you selected.

  • A window: If you choose the window option, the box will list your active windows available for sharing.

  • A Chrome tab: If you choose the chrome tab, a list of all your open Google Chrome tabs will appear.

  • Your entire screen: If you chose to share your entire screen, it will display a single screen.

Select the option from the pop-up box that you want to share and then click on the ‘Share’ button to start sharing.

A Window

A Chrome Tab

Your Entire Screen

The window/ tab you chose will open on the screen and participants in the meeting will be able to see your screen. When it’s finished, click on ‘Stop Presenting’ button on Google Meet to end the screen-sharing session.

When presenting a Chrome tab...

The chrome tab that you are sharing will also show a ‘Sharing this tab to meet.google.com’ message so you will know which tab you are sharing currently.

To change or switch a tab while presenting, go to the tab you want to start sharing, then click on the ‘Share this tab instead’ option below the address bar. You can also click on the ‘Stop’ button on the tab you are sharing to end the screen-sharing session without having to go to Google Meet.

Joining a Meeting Only to Present or to Present Using Another Device

The "Present" button that appears on the join screen of a Google Meet session provides the ability for a teacher to enter a second time and not have to worry about all of the audio/background/echo issues that can occur when being in the same Meet twice.

This option is ideal when a teacher wants to see what a presentation looks like on the viewer's end and when using two different devices.

When you do this, you will not be part of the meeting and won’t receive any audio or video from other people, and other people in the meeting won’t receive yours. You will only be able to share your screen, application window, or a Chrome tab.

To use this option, simply click the "Present" button and then select the presentation mode that best fits your needs. Teachers can copy and paste the link in a new browser tab a second time and then select "Join Now." There, teachers can monitor their students and the chat feature!

Someone Else is Already Presenting

  • If someone in the meeting is already presenting, you can take over the screen from them and start sharing your screen instead.

  • Host Controls will allow you to change the setting to disable others from presenting.

  • When someone else is presenting, the ‘Present Now’ option will be replaced by "_________ is presenting." Click on it to initiate your presentation.

  • After you select what you want to share, and click the share option, another pop-up box will appear on the screen confirming to you that ‘This will let you take over from _________ as the main presenter’.

  • Click on ‘Share now’ to start presenting, or ‘Wait’ to wait for them to end their presentation.

  • When you click on ‘Share now’, the other person’s presentation will stop and they will receive the message that someone else took over.

Closed Captioning

Closed Captioning is an accessibility feature that allows participants to display the spoken words from the Meet on the screen for themselves.

Captions help reinforce verbal messages that might otherwise be lost.

Captions in Meet are controlled by the individual participant and will not be recorded if a recording occurs during the session (this also applies to the Host/Moderator of the session and anyone who starts the recording).

Any Meet participant is able to turn on captions by either:

  • Clicking the "Turn on Captions" button located in the bottom bar of Google Meet.

  • Selecting the three dots and clicking "Turn on Captions".

Translate Your Closed Captions!

Individual participants have the ability to translate closed captions, as well as any other text that appears in a Google Meet session. Check out the video below to see how!
