Colored Ice Melt

Do Different Color Ice Cubes Melt Faster?

For this years Science Fair I wanted to test if different colored ice cubes would melt faster than other ones. I tested the following four colors. Red, blue, green, and yellow. I wanted to do this project because I drinking gatorade one day with ice cubes and to me it seemed like the gatorade tasted more like water. That made me think that the ice cube was melting. This was interesting to me so i decided to do it.

To start, I got out a cup of water and food dye. I put the food dye in the water and put it in the freezer to freeze. I took out the frozen ice cube and put a lamp up to it that was 165 degrees. I started a timer and saw how long it took the ice cubes to melt. I did this to all the ice five times and recorded the time.

The normal ice cube (no food dye) got times of 1 min and 49 sec, 1 min and 52 sec, 1 min and 55 sec, 1 min and 48 sec, and 1 min and 50 sec. For the red ice it got times of 1 min and 56 sec, 1 min and 57 sec, 1 min and 57 sec, 1 min and 59 sec, and 1 min and 55 sec. The blue ice got times of 1 min 57 sec, 1 min 56 sec, 1 min 57 sec, 1 min 55 sec, and 1 min and 56 sec. Finally, the green ice got times of 1 min and 54 sec, 1 min 55 sec, 1 min and 54 sec, 1 min 55 sec, and 1 min 54 sec.

According to my research, the normal ice cube will melt the fastest and the blue ice cube take a longer time to melt. The green ice was second to the normal ice and the red one was third between the green and the blue ice.

In conclusion, the normal ice will melt the fastest and the blue ice will take longer than the rest. The green was second and the red was third. I would still choose normal ice in my drink but if you want something with less water choose blue ice.
