How the amount of flour affects cupcakes

My hypothesis is that the more flour is in the cupcakes the higher they will rise.

In conclusion, my hypothesis was correct. The more flour that was put into the cupcakes the higher they rose.

    1. Acquired supplies for the cupcakes

    2. Made batch one with one and a half cups of flour

    3. Measured the first cupcake

    4. Made batch two with two cups of flour

    5. Measured the second cupcake

    6. Made batch three with half a cup of flour

    7. Measured the third cupcake.

How Much Does the Amount of Flour Affect Cupcakes?

My project for the 2017 science fair is seeing how much flour affects cupcakes. My hypothesis is that the more flour is added to a recipe, the more the cupcakes will rise. I chose this project because I like to bake; it is fun to see the reactions in the cupcakes from changing one aspect of the recipe.

The recipe called to set the oven at 350 degrees. About halfway through the 18 minutes of baking, we rotated the pan 90 degrees and baked for 9 more minutes. The cupcakes were not fully done baking so we kept them in the oven for four two minute increments. To make sure all the cupcakes were exactly the same we used half a cup of batter in each cupcake tin. We cut a straw and put it in the first cupcake; this was the given recipe. In the second batch, we put two cups of flour instead of one. We did the same thing for batches two and three.

The data for my three batches was quite similar. Batch one’s cupcake, which had one and a half cups of flour, measured 5 centimeters tall. Batch two, which had two cups of flour, came in at 5.9 centimeters. Batch three required only one half of a cup of flour, and resulted in a cupcake that measured out as 3 centimeters. The texture of batch one was crunchy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside; pretty much the perfect cupcake. We measured the cupcake and it was exactly 5 centimeters tall. Batch two’s cupcake measured 5.9 centimeters, and batch three measured 3 centimeters exactly.

My hypothesis was correct; I thought that the flour would make the cupcakes rise. I know this because the cupcakes progressively got bigger as we added more flour. I learned that if there isn’t enough of one element to a recipe, the cupcakes will burn much faster. I could improve this by making the cupcakes more times.
