Less Than 500 Hours to Go

Over the past month, my morning ESOL classes have continued to be my big classes. My students are continuing to learn about health literacy. I really hope that they gain knowledge on how to find a health insurance plan and doctor that they like. My afternoon GED class are resourceful students who are learning a variety of subjects for their exams. A representative from the Community Redevelopment Agency came in as a guest speaker and explained what is happening in the neighborhood giving students a voice in their community. Disaster preparedness guest speakers will be coming to my classes in the coming weeks to discuss how each student can prepare for disasters in the future. My evening class has been continually absent this month (just like in January). I am not sure what I should do about this class. All of my students have been invited to a field trip to the art museum in a nearby town. The museum admission is free. However, the students must pay for their own bus tickets. I have students that are signed up for the trip. There is a growing waiting list for students who need tutoring. The library potentially has a volunteer who wants to coordinate the tutoring program, so I and future AmeriCorps members can focus on direct service. Last week was spring break, so I was able to travel around Florida and gain more inspiration for my program. Seeing old college friends lead to interesting discussions. Late last week, the AmeriCorps had a retreat in Key Largo. We participated in team building activities and ice breakers. I kayaked for the first time ever. It was nice to see almost all of the AmeriCorps members and our 3 AmeriCorps supervisors at the same place doing activities together.
