My adult English language learners are focused on a health literacy unit. I am glad that I focused on this theme, because it helps them navigate through important situations and information. I can teach sentence structures and vocabulary while addressing health literacy issues. In my GED classes, I not only focus on the exam questions, I also give students an opportunity to learn how to learn outside of the classroom. I have introduced them to YouTube Channels, websites, and TV shows that they can access at home or at the library on their own time. I have helped over 160 people who have walked into my office or classroom over the course my service year. This number continues to grow every day. I have started to put together my AmeriCorps career portfolio and realized that I have 7 nationally-recognized lesson plans. I will put other artifacts in my portfolio. In September, I will start a year-long graduate school program and will use my career portfolio to network for a field experience/internship and eventually a full-time job. I will use social networking to help me network with fellow AmeriCorps Alums and potential employers. I am glad that I am an AmeriCorps member.
