AmeriCorps Service Artifacts

I served in the Literacy AmeriCorps of Palm Beach County. From Monday through Thursday, my main task was to teach adult literacy in English and other academic subjects at the Boynton Beach City Library. At the library, I also coordinated a tutoring program, organized enrichment programs (potlucks, field trips, and guest speaker presentations) for teens and adults, and helped children with their science and math homework. In my AmeriCorps cohort, I did a variety of service projects on the weekends and served a committee that recognized birthdays and service-related accomplishments.

As an AmeriCorps member, I participated in an intensive training in August 2013 and every Friday until July 2014. One of my favorite trainings was with the Palm Beach County Emergency Services Department, in which I completed a FEMA course. On the weekends, my fellow AmeriCorps members and I participated in service projects at a variety of non-profit organizations, schools, libraries, museums, parks, government agencies, and festivals.

These are the slides I used during the 2018 AmeriCorps Week at Sayre High School.

Following my AmeriCorps service, I used my Segal Education Award to enroll in the Master of Library and Information Science program at Rutgers University. I graduated within 13 months and shortly after, became the 2015 - 2017 Eugene Garfield Resident in Science Librarianship at the University of Pennsylvania. While in Philadelphia, I joined the AmeriCorps Alums Philadelphia Chapter and became involved with the Professional Development & Networking Committee. In early 2018, the committee was dissolved; during this time, AmeriCorps Alums merged with the Service Year Alliance. I became active in establishing the Service Year Alliance (SYA) Philadelphia Chapter. I served the SYA Philadelphia Chapter Community Team Co-Leader until 2019. Starting in 2019, the Service Year Alliance Philadelphia Chapter will be housed in the City of Philadelphia Office of Civic Engagement & Volunteer Service. In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020, I joined the Philadelphia Medical Reserve Corps utilizing my AmeriCorps training.
