Information Literacy Instruction

Like many academic librarians, I conduct information literacy sessions based on assigned liaison roles and by requests submitted by instructors.

I believe in multi-modal learning, which includes visual aids, short videos, group activities, and other techniques that reduce the amount of time spent on lecture. For example, I describe Boolean operators using meaningful Venn Diagrams.

Critical Writing Program:

Each semester, I am assigned to 2 to 3 sections of the Critical Writing Program. Each seminar is based on a subject or topic that is geared towards undergraduate students. For each course, I design a research guide and lesson plan. See the 1st table on the right.

As the Community Health & Engineering Librarian, I will continue to teach library instruction sessions in 2 to 3 sections sections within this program per semester.

Chemical Information Course:

In March 2016, I subbed for the Chemistry Librarian who teaches a semester-long required Chemical Information course for doctoral chemistry students. I demonstrated how to use Ovid Medline. As the Community Health & Engineering Librarian, I may continue to guest lecture in this course as needed.

Postdoctoral Writing Group:

In April 2016, I taught an all-female STEM postdoctoral writing group how to use PubsHub to identify journals and conferences to which they can potentially submit their materials.

School of Engineering and Applied Science:

From June 2016 through present, I have been requested to teach information literacy to high school students attending summer camp programs as well as engineering undergraduate students. See the 2nd table on the right.

In my new position as the Community Health & Engineering Librarian, I will continue to teach information literacy sessions for students in the Critical Writing Program, the NURS 380 Community Nursing course, and the School of Engineering & Applied Science, with the goal to increase the number of information literacy sessions at the School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS). I continue to expand the number of library instruction sessions held for K-12 participants of various STEM outreach programs such as internship and summer camp experiences. Since 2018, I taught library instruction sessions for 5 SEAS summer programs, 1 BioEyes cohort, and 1 Public Health Pipeline Program cohort.
