root

The root device name. Any file names that do not specify an explicit device name are read from this device. The default is normally set by GRUB at startup based on the value of ‘prefix’.

For example, if GRUB was installed to the first partition of the first hard disk, then:

• prefix might be set to (hd0,msdos1)/boot/grub
• root to hd0,msdos1.
