Final Project
Final Project
Project Foundation
Research Question:
How I can use the digital tools to replicate the look and feel of
digital media content into the real world?
Proposal :
I will create digital media content using 2D programming, then use 3D
programs to replicate the same media, to then be produced into the real world. I will use digital and physical 3D techniques to get the same feeling and tone set to the audience. It will serve to show how digital media can be produced into the real world without losing its qualities that made it so unique in the first place. In this case, it would be having horror elements.
Suggested Idea:
When proposing my personal project to he professor, he recommended I try using AR in my project, and i actually liked the idea of anyone being able to bring a horror experience in their own home and not just bigger studios. I wanted to try and make my own home a horror experince.
Initial Sketch
2D Sketch
The first step of this process was to create a 2D sketch that imbodied horror elements. I had made multiple variants and asked multiple people which they had thought was the most disturbing. This was the top result. I also kept in mind how it would look when I 3D rendered my creature and where I can place it in my home.
3D Sculpting
3d Sculpting Process:
When sculpting this creature, I wanted to think how light would look when its casted from either side, and how much light would reflect off of it. I tired to make the body bony with stretched skin like texture, there were a few things I wished i had done differently like the arm/hand positioning.
I started using basic shapes and stevhing and folding them into similar shames where i can go in and ad more details on the main body such as sunkin skin, bones, and sockets. Once I was able to sculpt all the body parts and add the details I wanted I moved onto the UV unwrapping.
After painting the body, I added some final touches such as the eyes and teeth. I wanted the teeth to be bright so you could see them in darker shadows, and the eyes to be inverted inward so there would be no shine on them giving them a hallow look
AR Implementation
Augmented Reality:
I was thinking about what AR programs I could use where it would let me use my space on a bigger scale and that would let me postion my creature how I liked, Adobe Aero had both of these features so I had decied to use it on my phone to give it the feeling of someone trying to record a scary sighting in their home. I placed my creature in a dark part of my home and positioned it as if it was peaking around the coner at me.
I also took a video and made sure to move around to show the creature standing in place and that it followed where you moved. Overall a pretty creepy experience look at on your phone in the dark
Conclusion
There where mnay things i liked about this project but also things I wish I could change for the final result. I liked how i was able to show that anyone can translate digital media into their own world, showing that you can capture the same feelings and ideas of art. Having a easy solution for stardard people to experince the magic of seeing something on your phone screen in your own home rather than only having big production comapnies make digtal media a reality.
What I do wish I could’ve had different was the ability to hide the 3d object behind things in your own world (ex. walls, furniture, etc.) but instead it just sits in front of everything, so you have to angle yourself and the object correctly for the illusion not to break. This can be annoying when trying to move around and show the object following you or if youre trying to do a 360 of the model. I know this can be fixed by modling the world around the object but it wouldnt be personalized within your own home. A major creepy factor is that there is something known to the human brain inside a place you consider safe, setting of the fear of the known. If I wanted to advance something like this, I would make a AR program that identified objects wihthin your space so you can work with them rather than around.
