Nani-ji (my grandmother) taught me towards the end of her life about one aspect of devotional love. She told me how she used to do hindu pujas as a way to connect to 'god'. These puja were a form of worship of an idol that represented the gods and consisted of doing things like bathing them, dressing them, offering food, singing and aarti (fire ritual). In doing so, she would concentrate on awakening a genuine emotion of bhakti, a feeling of divine devotion and love. As she grew older and neared death, her body would no longer allow her to do these things. At that point, she said that she would visualize the puja and that would be enough. Then, as even more time passed, she said that she no longer needed to visualize a puja and instead she could directly connect with 'god'. By then 'god' was genderless and formless. When I asked her about her thoughts on traditional puja, she told me that it was a useful tool to help one focus their minds. From all of this, I learned that it is important for a person to find a way to feel genuine devotional and somewhat selfless love. For some, this can be in other forms of caretaking such as taking care of a child...however the danger in that is that eventually the child will grow and that form of caretaking will end. One important task that I have is to figure out how to practice devotional love where I can focus my mind on it and really emanate it.
