Sound Track for Depression

The first series of my podcast is on the topic of Depression. My vision for the podcast is for it to have a destiny beyond being a collection of stories and knowledge...I want it to be living...I want it to have a fertility....and be capable of giving birth. To realize this, this podcast will be the reason that I create collaborations that will lead to the creation of artwork, music and collaborative idea generation discussions that are based on the stories that I have collected. One of the stories is on Tim, a beautiful soul who passed away. When helping organize his memorial, I requested two musicians to play piano, one at the beginning and one at the end. Years later, I contacted Jeremy K. and we reunited to compose music for the soundtrack of the podcast. Below is our brainstorm:

Jeremy and Vivek.mp3

We recorded this sample on Sunday October 13, 2018 and is an impromptu jam with three themes (where Jeremy and I switched off):

  • Theme 1 (0-2:14): A solo note repeating over a moving landscape of chords, representing the lonely journey of a depressed soul. We thought of the Raindrop prelude by Chopin when composing it.

  • Theme 2 (2:14-4:20): A nocturn where repeating appegiated loops represent the loops of depression that often ensnares us.

  • Theme 3 (4:20-5:55): A haunting and slow secluded progression of chords intermixed with dissonant notes with background sounds of life bleeding throughout.

  • Theme 4 (5:55-6:45): A moment of gentle resolution and the passing of a storm.

Embroyonic Idea

I am planning on making an experimental musical album, everyone is welcome to collaborate. Because it is experimental, you don't have to be able to 'play well'. I am also interesting in applying sonification of data.

Here is one thematic progression of ideas (each track I will collaborate with a different person).

1. Mother Earth is impregnated with Humanity by the evolution of Animals

2. The embryo of Humanity grows as it consumes the soul of Mother Earth

3. Mother Earth gives birth to Humanity

4. Humanity grows, with an untethered destiny through evil and good, through destruction and creation

5. Humanity is impregnated with Technology

6. The embryo of Technology grows in the premature soul of Humanity

7. Humanity gives birth to Technology
