2012 was a historic year for Unirondack as we held our first members weekend and annual weekend together over the Columbus day weekend. What a great October weekend we had with a camp full of folks all dedicated to Unirondack - enjoying the present but assuring the future by their active participation. Members came from several states and a network was established to assure our reach directly into the congregations in these far off areas. At the meeting the boards plans for the foundation drive were discussed and critiqued by the membership. The foundation drive continues to pick up momentum as all board members and our executive director are now focusing efforts to continue the successful campaign.
Our new management team pulled together to create an unforgettable 2012 season for many campers. Dan, Kris, Kaeley and Lorraine are hard at work planning on 2013. I would like to thank then entire 2012 staff for their great contribution of effort. I would also like to thank all the scores of volunteers who gave so much during our work weekends and to the board volunteers who give their time and effort year round. As board president I have the pleasure of receiving the monthly donation report downloads and it is fun and exciting to see the large and small contributions come in. Our outreach to alumni has the great side benefit of reconnecting former staff and campers with this place which one time held such a central role in each persons life. This year many tears were shared by people rediscovering the power of our little corner of the world.
As my son heads out to his first youth convention it is a clear statement to the camp keeping the youth connect to the church. Being new to the youth group he was told that, " 'cons' were just like Unirondack - only on a weekend." Our UU camp holds an important key to sparking the understanding our youth grasp of the wider world. Life at the camp puts the theories learned in church into real-life practice. The magic of Unirondack can hold one through adulthood and thus the connections to the UU church can also be kept burning or rekindled through Unirondack.
I hope to see you in 2013
