The wall along road entrance was a long term project that spanned over 10 years I think. Designed was sketched at lunch and then started at the Gilman access road end. Many many people helped at work weekends and other weekends to make the wall grow all the way to the shower house. Summer crew built the section on the South side of the Gilman access road.

Original Concept drawing Chadwick addition Devin Hollands
Chadwick, I have finally made some sketches that can be taken to Chris Duerr the architect who can turn the sketches into real drawings.. I hope to have this done for the meeting.
My concept is to turn this into a very nice cabin - that campers will enjoy in summer and in off peak seasons.
The plan calls for a 10' extension on the end of the building towards the hill. Extension would follow the existing profile and just make a longer building.
The central bathrooms which cut the building in half would be removed.
This would open the building up and allow for extra bed and maybe room for a central table....
The wiring would be updated 100% with safe baseboard electric heat installed for shoulder season.
Walls insulated, and interior walls covered in nice V-notch pine - sealed with polyurethane .
New Large windows would be placed - replacing existing and adding new openings.
The ceiling would make a gentle rise about 1.5 feet.. giving some height to the room... A central ceiling fan could installed
The floors are already nice hardwood floors which can be sanded and sealed.
The front porch would be rebuilt - with new doors installed
Lights - 'can type' installed in ceiling.. spotting at the head of the beds... 3 zones left center right.. each can be controlled.. Central overhead lighting on either side of the fan...as well
The Extension:
From the main cabin room an open doorway leads to a small sink area.. where one or two sinks are available.
from the sink room you enter a door to the bathroom... toilet and tub room... with nice window to the back woods.
The extension allows for a small room in the corner not used for the bathroom.. this room can have an outside door opening towards crew shop...
the small room has an inside door that opens into the sink room...
This extra room can be used for extra counselor, luggage, private room etc etc...
Water heater installed outside building or outside of the maintenance shop...
IF existing Leach Field is not adequate for the shower water.. the Leach field on the playing field is already set up to take run off from the woods cabins.. the pipe just has to be run from the cabins down to the field. There is one zone on the field UNUSED that was built for the woods cabins.
We need to know if the budget has room for this renovation.. as the grant we requested was turned down from the State convention.

Katie, I remember your grandfather as very active in matters Unirondack. My wife Joyce and I met as LRYers (Liberal Religious Youth) at Unirondack in the summer of 1951. I was there for several weeks that first summer - AUW camp with my mother - and LRY camp.
I worked on the maintenance staff in 1955 and 56. Then, I became Program Director in 1959 and 1960 while in seminar at St. Lawrence University Theological School. Fred would probably been on the Board at that time. Subsequently, my wife and I have both served as Chair of the Unirondack Board, and have fond memories. We courted there and spent a day of our honeymoon at Unirondack in 1961.
I remember your grandfather as both a no-nonsense hard worker and a man of good humor. A real Universalist!

I kind of like having the laundry areas spread around the campus... Near to where folks live.. having 4 minor messes rather than one major laundry mess???
for sure you could add one set to lower leining in the middle room rather than take away from the lounge room

I think it is easier to manage and for people to access if it is all in one place. Having it in two places has not worked out well.

to Kris, Dan
so if we had a central spot.. we pull the washer/dryer out of Leining .. so the folks in Leining/Overlook/woods would go up to the central place and see if anything open?
We can do the same with showers and pull the showers out of the buildings? make them use the central shower...
I am not getting why people would not want things closer to their home spot?

Camp Unirondack <director@unirondack.org>Nov 8, 2012, 10:06 AM
to me
If we get extra staff housing, couldn't we just take all of the washers and dryers out of the showerhouse entirely and put them in lower leining? Would that create more space in the showerhouse?
I don't care if they end up in the showerhouse or in leining but I do think a central location would be nicer.

OK then it sounds like from a technical perspective there are more advantages to multiple spots for laundry. So let's keep one washer/dryer in leining and move the two that are currently in the showerhouse to the extension. Yeah? So then what do you have planned, if anything, for that center room? It has to be designated for something otherwise (as I'm sure you know) it will become a designated crap collector closet in a hurry.

I want to keep the laundry in showerhouse as is... I do not want laundry in the new basement...is my point..
I think to make existing spot better we remove the hotwater heaters.... take down the dividing wall so bigger room for laundry.
we want the heaters in the basement.. to keep basement warm.... when you go year round...
Devin

Final OUTCOME was we kept the Laundry room OUT of the new Anderson Basement and made a CENTRAL laundry in lower Leining. (this room had been used for overflow camper space but the Central Laundry has worked out well. Pete Howlett engineered and build all the Laundry hook ups.

Dan and I worked over the list of projects as we see things today... 1-10years.. and range for roof replacement.
Attaching exact years to roof replacement is hard as they have a wide range of life span.. so depending on budgets/inspection etc. you
can do them as needed.
Fixing dollars to projects is very hard so they should be done as needed case by case - or for 1 - 2 year outlook for budget...
But the LIST lets you know what we are thinking - this list has been added to the crew manual google doc
1,3,5,10 projects every roof over 10 years..
1 year projects:
Artshop - foundation/siding/roof
Boathouse shed (could be 2 -year )

Showerhouse girls toilet dividers - Pete to build
Athletic field to stop rain from accumulating in ponds
Leining - dehumidifier for lower room direct to drain
Continue retaining walls
Lightning rods on buildings- (very expensive unless we do ourselves but some question about whether this is advisable. Pete is
working on getting someone there to give us an estimate and we might do just the main buildings or even one at a time over several
years)
Replace non-working washer (s) and dryers(s)
New refrigerator for staff lounge (or get a donation?)
Get what we need to fight fires in lower camp (new hose - nozzle and quick connections) shed for hose/equipment flood lights for
pump
3 year projects:
Gilman finish inside siding
Gilman new side windows
Gilman outdoor eating/meeting deck on end of building (3-5 years)
Sweet - lower bathroom - additional bathroom?
Showerhouse - expansion for rooms - up and on side
Overlook - build out upper rooms towards rear of building

looks like side of Sweet in Gilman access Road 1994-95 tank (replaced in 2002 with new leach field)
Caretaker - Butch Morse actually built the bathroom which was a completely new room added onto the building. Based on Hollands plan as on observation that the beams were in place for the floor as the beams on the first floor ran further than the second story rooms
When Devin took over the Buildings and Grounds committee from Marc G in 1995 the first task given was to fix up the nasty looking old showerhouse building. This sketch was the start of the plans
No local contractors will work - Boathouse repairs needed and Access Road to Gilman needed. Both projects were done by crew in 1978 summer. Lower Sweet no wiring still from fire damage.
Erik spells out the the OLD lodge needed to be rewired but it burned the following summer. The plans for the boathouse cement pillars are attached. Erik completed the boathouse task in 1978.
