to Richard, Mark, me
Lucille Smith was the RE director in Little Falls (not Utica) and then worked at Syracuse University. From SU she invited international graduate students to be on staff at Unirondack for the World Citizenship Camp(s), usually one person each year. The international student sent recipes from his/her country to the camp cook, who did her best to create and serve several of the dishes during camp. Note that "camps" were 2 weeks long - as were kid camps at Ferry Beach. They were really RE extensions.

Mark, I do know about the World Citizenship Camp at Unirondack - as does Joyce. It was developed by Lucille Smith, who was the DRE at Utica until she became the educational consultant for the NYS Convention of Universalists. Howard Gilman, NYSCU Superintendent, was also involved. There was a deliberate effort to create a camp that was inclusive re. race, ethnicity, religion, nation, etc. The staff recruited reflected that variety. The age-range was 13-15. There were UU kids, plus kids from the Onondaga Reservation south of Syracuse, from NYC, from the Dominican Republic, from upstate, among other places, and, I think, some international exchange students. A good many scholarships made that possible. I was personally involved in 1954-55?? as a staff member and in 1959 and 1960 as Program Director. It was a rich experience. I'll cc Joyce in on this and she can further elaborate. Both of us have served as Chair of the Unirondack Board and she can put you in touch with Devin Hollands, who has some information on history.
David Cole, as you probably know, is dead. His widow Iska, is alive, and you can reach her at iskacole@gwi.net.
We are well, though I am going in for hip replacement surgery February 20 and will be semi-laid up for a couple of months. I have a new book of meditations out and another one soon to follow - collecting material from my days on Winton Road. I am working on two RE books, one, an historical anthology, is about to go to the publisher. The other, my RE philosophy, will follow in a few months. Meanwhile, President of Interfaith Impact of NYS and of the UU Retired Ministers and Partners Association (when do we welcome you and Donna?) - and grandparenting keeps me busy. Joyce is the uber-volunteer with NYSCU, FISH, Universalist Church Choir and chair of the music committee. We attend there now. I am doing a UU Poetry Slam of UU poets on whom I have preached as an auction fund-raiser. We are two seventy-something hyperactives, but generally enjoying life!
Have I sent you my poem and sermon on Selma? I think I've sent you most of my civil rights, etc, sermons. I'm sure you have been in touch with Dick Leonard and Gordon Gibson on this.
Best to Donna.

Dear Dick,
I hope you and Joyce are well and your family, too.
I am sitting a M/L reading old Universalist Leader in the May 1954 there is a picture of a camp at Unirondack. "World Citizenship Camp of Junior High Youth" Aug 1 -14. There is a picture with 15 kids and 3 look African-American. It also says it has members forom South American, england, Holland... Japan. You would have been out of junior high by then, since I also came across a report on the 1955 Biennial that said you were a monitor, but do you know anythig about the camp.
