The Frostspell Halberd is a polearm developed by the elves of Tassendrel for use as an anti-personnel weapon. While shaped like a halberd with an ax and spearhead, it is technically a magical staff adapted for combat.
The shaft of the Frostspell Halberd is filled with crushed aurite crystals. Elderkin with the ability to manipulate ice slowly begin releasing their magic into these crushed crystals to power the device. Once it’s reached a sufficient charge, ice shards develop on the end of the ax and spearheads. Any target smaller than 13 meters in length will be almost instantaneously frozen solid when struck with the Frostspell Halberd.
The wielder of the Frostspell Halberd also has the option to use the weapon for a one time projectile attack. The user aims the spearhead towards his intended target and, using magic, unleashes an icy blast of wind-driven frost that freezes any target 20 to 40 meters in front of the wielder. Using this attack however depletes the halberd of it’s ice magic. The magic has to be slowly replenished over some time before the halberd can again freeze targets.
Another drawback of the Frostspell Halberd was its fragility. If the shaft was ever breached while fully charged, it would instantly freeze its unfortunate halberdier. Finally the Frostspell Halberd lacked the ability to penetrate heavy armor or thick walls. Frostspell Halberds saw combat during the War of the Dawn. They were often used for clearing trenches or machine gun nests.
