"Their obsession with masks and trinkets is a curious spectacle. Like Elderkin, It's as if they're desperately clinging to a bygone era. The rest of us have moved forward, but they seem trapped in the past. remembering tales only they know"

The Region where Umridel now lies was home to the Marecea people, a human culture group that resided along The Ruby Sea, they where a diverse people and lived simple lives in the shadows of The Elruth Empire to the north.
As the first milenia of the 2nd age went by, the location of the Fourth gate was discovered. The Elruth Empire quickly claimed its location and fortified the land around it in case the The Forgotten would return as they had done with the previous three.
Manual labour and slaves where taken from the Marecea Lowlands to help build the mighty fortress of Tundegqi It took two generations of human labourers to finish the construction and the infrastructure to supply the fortification with manpower and agriculture was established by forcing the primitive Mareceans to work the fields to supply the new Protectorate of Elruth
During the first years of the 2nd age the Dwarven fortress made to protect the suspected location of a The Fourth Gate crumbled to infighting as the forces of darkness came again to Ciradon. Armies of Elves and Dwarves rallied to fend off the evil, while the weak minded humans and lesserkin of the Mareca Lowlands flocked to the banner of the new Dark lord.
When the Gate finaly was sealed and the forces of the Forgotten where vanquised. The Marecea was trown out of their ancestral lands by the new rightful wardens of the Marecean Lowlands: The Divine Bastion of Umridel The Marecea that where known to collude with the forces of evil where executed and the remaining where driven out of Umridel. Some fled into the Elruthian Desert into The Elruth Empire . Their western lands were accross the Kochur River where claimed by Tassendrel which later founded the port city of Marechal.
In port towns around the Ruby Sea, masked Marecean families thrive as artisans. They create and sell intricately crafted pots, figurines depicting noble elven knights, and totems of strange creatures. These works of art become a source of income for Traveling Marecean families, sustaining their livelihoods and preserving their cultural identity.
The legacy of the Forgotten stil remains within the Marecea bloodlines, manifested in cursed marks passed down through generations. These marks, influenced by the forth gate, have become an integral part of Marecean identity. To conceal these marks and protect their communities from potential Elderkin stigma, Mareceans have adopted the tradition of wearing masks and obscuring clothing.
Marecean masks consist of two halves—one covering the eyes and nose, and the other covering the mouth. These masks often bear motifs representing mythical creatures, animals or fieldic symbols. In eastern Marecean customs, a half of the mask is passed down to children, resulting in a unique blending of designs within families.
Mareceans place great importance on family, and the process of redemption is intertwined with familial bonds. Having more than two children is considered a bad omen, as it necessitates the creation of a new masks.
A belief among the Marecea is that redemption lies in the removal of both pieces of the mask. It symbolizes liberation from the curse and a fresh start. Mareceans who achieve this redemption often choose to remain with their families, and keep contributing to the community's well-being. Redeemed may then leave their comunities to see the world, often finding work outside of their communities.
Redeemed Mareceans, while now free to explore opportunities beyond their communities, rarely leave their families entirely. Those who do, often send back earnings from work or establish connections outside their insular communities to help their family and children in the future.
