- Whoever said it?
The Seven Confederated Principalities of Ravizanno, also known as the "Seven Crowns" or "Ravizanno", is a confederacy of seven Elven principalities in West Ciradon. It’s primarily located on Ravizanno Island with territory on the nearby island of Uzelt and the mainland territory of Vhalais. Thanks to the major leylines around Ravizanno the island has a wide array of magical flora and fauna, making it an excellent land for Elves to inhabit. Ravizanno is surprisingly diverse in its landscape which has given rise to variety of different lifestyles along the island and allowed for the rise of several independent principalities.
However after the end of the Ninth Gate War the small states have leagued together in order to better defend their interests from the larger Elven powers, which tried to pit the principalities against each other for their own gain. This confederacy has proven to be greatly stabilizing for Ravizanno and allowed great fleets and crack mercenary forces to protect the lucrative trade routes between North and Ruby Seas. The ley line rich sailing lanes of the Ravizan proved highly profitable.
This allowed the Seven Crowns to establish fortified trading posts along coastal islands around the world to operate their fleets from, colloquially known as Byralia and even seized the lands on either side of their primary trade lands to gain greater control. However with the rise of the Great Trade Fleets of Mirengar and the stricter enforcement of Hvel’Xiren’s north sea toll Feranno’s trade has begun to wane and while the War of Dawn temporarily expanded the coffers of the most wiley and least morally stringent merchant clans its end has shrunk the profits once more.
While Ravizan merchants still sail from port to port making trades around Tyrell, their influence has greatly diminished from their height, and when you have much larger neighbors, you can’t afford to let it slip too far.
Early History
Ravizanno was first settled by Elves during the forgotten age, though the exact date is unknown. They were almost certainly the ancestors of the nomadic Odenath Elves of the central Vaduren desert and the Kimull mesa of Ravizanno. The modern Odenath live almost entirely in the central regions of Ravizanno and the large expanse of the Tyshun desert immediately east of Ravizanno and south west of the 3 dynasties. The Ravizanno Odenath are dominated by the northern Ilkkavitt tribe and southern Dochhikarr tribe.
The tribes, while rivals, are both dedicated to the well being of the desert ecosystem and the Odenath trinity of deities, Rana, ruler of the Sun, Vana, ruler of the Sky, and Jana, ruler of the Earth. While they have been historically played off each other by the Princes of Ravizanno who are largely descended from the clans of Merchant Explorers who established themselves as lords over the burgeoning city states along the coastline and desert oases of Ravizanno, they had once been potent military forces and would gain concession in exchange for aligning with one prince or another in a given conflict.
The confederation of the crowns however, halted the conflict between principalities and therefore removed the leverage of the tribes.
Khali’nor
The oldest city established in Ravizanno is Khali’nor, the capital of the principality of Khali’nor. According to the oldest records in the city, Khali’nor was originally established as a trading post of Hvel’Luthnor in 154 of the First age that broke off in 236 of the First age during Tassendrel’s war for independence under the leadership of the merchant clans. Especially the prominent families of clan Ulichien, clan Daxrius, and clan Lyriam who moved to the island to take advantage of the minimal oversight and transformed the trading post into a small city state.
The clans formed an oligarchy and slowly expanded Khali’nor’s influence over the northern half of the island. Unfortunately for Khali’nor, their ruling clans fell into infighting, and a botched assassination attempt in the year 2418 of the First age turned into a civil war. The fighting eventually resolved with the Daxrius seizing control of Khali’nor and declaring themselves the Princes of Khali’nor. But Khali’nor was limited afterward by the new principalities of the other dynasties, leaving Khali’nor to focus on their navy and trade, something that Khali’nor has remained a powerhouse in among the Ravizanno principalities.
Hvel’Pir
To its east is the city of Pirdel, the capital of the principality of Hvel’Pir. The city of Pirdel split from Khali’nor during the Khali’nor civil war and has been dominated by the Ulichien dynasty since its independence in 2421 of the First age. The hills of Hvel’Pir has proven excellent for the both defense against its rivals in Yewairedrel and Khali’nor. Hvel’Pir has not had the same access to trade as their rivals but have still maintained a fleet to stop their rivals from gaining an edge over them, they are perhaps the weakest on paper of the 3 northern principalities but their defences kept them safe for centuries.
Yewairedrel
To the west of Khali’nor, also along the northern coast is the city of Yewaire, the capital of the principality of Yewairedrel. This city became the stronghold of the newly proclaimed Lyriam dynasty in 2420 of the First age and benefited greatly from a gold vein found in the Kimull mesa which they conquered and exploited with lesserkin slave labor. The gold expanded the trade routes running through the previously small city of Yewaire and resulted in the city's explosion.
This increased wealth allowed Yewairedrel to gain an edge over their two rivals. Though not enough of one to dominate the three northern principalities before the Krokinfae shadow war forced the principalities of Ravizanno to come together.
Kimulldrel
Along the western coast is the city of Kimull’nor as the city is located on a small cove along the dry coastline of the Kimull mesa. It is the capital of the principality of Kimulldrel which is the single largest principality of Ravizanno by land area, however it is also the poorest of the principalities due to the harsher climate of its territory. Kimull’nor’s economy is supported by a mixture of trade, fishing, and quarrying the beautiful purple, blue, and stardust sandstone bands of the mesa which are unique to Ravizanno.
Kimull’nur is ruled by the Shaznasis dynasty which founded the city after fleeing with their followers from the Saressen Empire after court intrigue resulted in the exile of the Shaznisis family in 2703 of the First age. Unlike the Ulichien, Daxrius, or Lyriam dynasties which often act like merchant princes, the Shaznisis operate more like absolute monarchs.
Hvel’Faro
Along the eastern coast an oasis just north of the central peninsula of Kimazla lies the city of Farosis, which is the capital of Hvel’Faro. First settled by shipwrecked Tassendreli Elves in 1161 of the First age, Farosis established itself as an independent port and watering hole before the Nytorian family arrived in 2218 of the First age. Over the course of just 100 years Vesperius Nytorian, Patriarch of the family seized effective control of every institution of the town and managed to get his family declared the royal dynasty of Farosis.
They expanded Hvel’Faro into the nearby Kimull mesa and even the Vaduren desert. The skillful strategies of Vesperius II allowed Hvel’Faro to survive long enough to find a silver vein within it territory which the industrious Apexus II used to properly develop magical industries with Farosis, know well regarded for its glassmaking and potions industries, with some of the best glassmakers and potion brewers living in the city bringing trade and wealth to Hvel’Faro beyond what the silver vein could have on its own.
It was the Princess of Hvel’Faro, Kasylia Nytorian I who managed to reveal the plotting of the Krokinfae and unite the Ravizan principalities during the Krokinfae shadow war and was heavily involved in the negotiations to form the Seven Confederate Principalities of Ravizanno in , However with her Great grandniece’s death in 1181 of the Second age during the 9th gate war, the capable Nytorian dynasty came to an end and the City is currently ruled by the Nazkyon dynasty which has been able but not as proficient at ruling as the Nytorians.
Solidrel
In the rich southern savannas lies the second oldest city in Ravizanno, Solidayl, the capital of the principality of Solidrel. First built as a trading post By a Frierdreli merchant clan in 519 of the first age for the harvesting of the valuable pelts and ivory of the Avias Savanna, Solidayl has become renowned for its Serpents and Serpent breeding programs. Many of the most common breeds of Serpents used in naval combat and for guarding trade fleets originated in Solidayl who have used the nearby major ley lines to enhance the breeding of their Serpents.
Serpent breeding and luxury goods allowed for Solidayl to propel itself to a major trading city and gained independence under the leadership of Sunarion Astirus of the Astirus dynasty. However, Solidayl’s fortunes have waned in recent centuries due to the depletion of the over hunted animals of the Avias Savanna and the defection of Serpent master Jovari Khamira to Mirengar which greatly reduced their advantage in Serpent raising over the rising republic.
Hvel’Avia
To the East of Solidayl is the port city of Avia’nor which is built upon the largest natural harbor on the island and is the capital of the Principality of Hvel’Avia. While the other principalities boast large fleets and prosperous trade goods, the sheer volume of trade that passes through Avia’nor due to the natural port is phenomenal, and while the trade isn’t quite as valuable, quantity is a quality all its own.
Avia’nor is ruled by the Laissor dynasty which was heavily involved in the founding of the city in 837 of the First age when the charismatic minor noble Valorian Laissor I struck out for new lands with a band of loyal followers. Avia’nor has benefited greatly from the same pelt and ivory trade as Solidayl but their monarch's wise decision to limit hunting and begin testing the potential of starting ranching the animals has created large domestic herds which have proven of great benefit to Avia’nor.
Krokinfae Shadow War
In the year 658 of the Second age, the Kronkinfae Dynasty of the 3 dynasties began to eye the Island of Ravizanno as a potential colony. While the 3rd gate war had devastated the territories of Hvel’Luthnor and left the 3 dynasties as the last remaining royal lineages, over 175 years had passed and the Dynasties wanted to begin the process of showing the world that they were capable of exerting their influence.
Fresh off its establishment of a self-expanding and loyal human vassal state on the peninsula north of Ravizanno, the Krokinfae dynasty wanted to secure Feranno Bay and the trade routes from West Ciradon to the Ruby Sea. These trade routes could give the dynasty the wealth to secure its dominance over the other two dynasties. They began sending envoys and employing spies to encourage the various principalities of Ravizanno to wage war upon each other to weaken their armies and they were quickly able to drive Khali’nor and Yewairedrel to war.
As tensions rose across the island, Princess Kasylia Nytorian I revealed the plots of the Krokinfae with prodigious use of magic and her own spies. She bravely rode herself between the marching armies of Yewairedrel and Khali’nor and stopped the first clash of arms before it began. The Krokinfae tried to salvage the situation by invading early, but a league formed under the leadership of Wazavio “The Glaive” Astirus II of Solidrel was able to defeat the armies of the Krokinfae on land in the battles of Themila, Red crossings, and Yewaire.
Followed by their navies in the battles of the Yellow cliffs and Khali cove. Each victory of the coalition forces solidified the willingness of the principalities to work together. Eventually the principalities achieved victory in the Krokinfae Shadow war, known to much of Tyrell as the Feranno Bay war, and weakened the position of the Krokinfae dynasty within Hvel’Luthnor. This league proved so successful that Kasylia and Wazavio managed to convince the other principalities to make the arrangement more permanent by forming a confederacy, securing peace upon Ravizanno and allowing the principalities to focus their strength elsewhere.
Confederation
Hvel’Faro offered a fortress in the middle of the Vaduren desert as a neutral meeting ground and, along with Hvel’Avia and Kimulldrel gave some territory in the desert to form a commonly administered territory known as Ferandel. Now Ferandel has become a small city and hosts a series of artisans and merchants who primarily work to support the demands of court life in the city of seven crowns. Ferandel started as a border fort and guard post within Vaduren desert in order to guard the Darash Path, a road crossing the desert and steppes of the island following a string of magical oases.
Ferandel guards one such oasis, however since the formation of the Seven Confederated Principalities of Ravizanno the fortress of Ferandel has been transformed into a palace. The seven princes felt that a utilitarian structure did not reflect well upon the majesty of their confederation and each invested into a section of the structure in an attempt to outdo the others until the fortress had become a sprawling palace complex.
Late Second Age
For years the best architects that the Ravizan monarchs could afford were brought to Ferandel to improve their section of the palace complex giving each section a unique grace but the structure as a whole has poor cohesion, in some ways a perfect reflection of the union itself. This architectural arms race was also reflected in the capital cities of the Ravizanno principalities as the cities expanded in glamor and wealth, largely thanks to the fact that the armies of the forgotten never once reached Ravizanno’s shores throughout the nine gate wars making it an ideal place for skilled refugees to flock to.
While the competition between the Princes shifted to architecture and other artistic pursuits, the navies of the Principalities also expanded as their ability to project force across the ocean was much more important to the princes than to defend territory from allies. The period of peace has led to the rapid expansion of trade networks including a series of coastal trade forts known as Byralia that expanded the wealth of the small principalities considerably. However with the end of the Gate wars, The Seven Confederated Principalities’ fortunes began to wane.
With the rise of Mirengar as a major trading power in the ruby sea, the Ravizans lost influence with many states as their trade fleets were no longer as necessary. Jjopil’s subverting of the Serpent breeding of Solidayl and its use as a major logistic node and staging ground during the Orc war sealed Mirengar as the dominant trading power in the Ruby sea and began Ravizanno’s downfall. Still there was always money to be made, and while the principalities are not as rich, they are still wealthy from trade between the north and ruby seas.
Third Age
Despite the Seven Crowns of Ravizanno’s lack of interest in human technological advancement, the War of Dawn proved a boon to the increasingly sidelined Principalities. With the focus of the powers of West Ciradon focused on the drama of the war with Voskgardia and suddenly wary of the human realms, the hands of the Princes were freed. The Three Dynasties had largely been able to stop the Seven Crowns from taking territory outside of their island besides the Byralias, but this changed with their resources entirely devoted to the war effort.
The Seven Crowns seized first the island of Uzelt, formerly controlled by a small Lycan republic for centuries, incorporating it as a common territory like Ferandel. Then it began to expand its influence along the Odenathi coast, seizing the most fertile regions of the coast from the Odenath tribes just south of Losia and naming the common territory Vhalais after the bay the armies of the Seven crowns first landed in.
While they were unable to seize the entire coastline before the Three dynasties were able to once again turn their attention to other affairs. With this expansion The Seven Crowns control the coast on each side of the leyline routes between the north sea and the Ruby sea. While not strictly necessary for elderkin maritime trade, the speed and utility provided by the leyline routes means that most ships now find it necessary to stop in a Seven Crown port when traveling between the two seas, expanding the coffers of the princes once more.
This section is work in progress.
The Seven Crowns is not just an informal name for the Seven Confederated Principalities of Ravizanno, but also a nickname for its primary ruling institution, the Chamber of Princes. With the sole exception of the common territories, like the outskirts of Ferandel, the lands of the Seven Crowns are ruled directly by their dynasty and without interference by the other princes. While the institution of the Chamber of Princes has limited powers, its members being the princes of the constituent principalities means that the Chamber has effectively become an oligarchy of 7, ruling over the entire island.
The Chamber of Princes only has authority over foreign affairs, external trade, and the rule of common territories. In these regards each Prince is given exactly one vote and with a few exceptions, rules are confirmed by majority vote. The exceptions to majority vote are any rule that requires funding from sources other than the common treasury (like a loan or from the purses of the princes), the appointment of individuals to higher office, the confirmation of treaties, and declarations of war.
Because of long established traditions the princes never propose laws themselves, instead their First Ministers, a trusted advisor brought to the chamber by each prince, proposes legislation on behalf of the prince. Though common practice is for the prince to discuss with the prime minister what rules will be imposed ahead of time. During emergencies, such as the gate wars or an invasion, one prince is elected the Overprince to better organize the forces of the principalities. However they are limited to 6 month terms and each prince is only allowed two terms in a row as Overprince.
While each principality has its own rules regarding how it is run, different laws of succession, and different traditions govern each principality. In the three northern realms, the origins of the royal lines as rival merchant princes is evident in the ability of successful enough merchant families to be ennoble and the emphasis of the noble families on expanding their wealth primarily through trade. A heritage that has made their relationship with specific land transactional rather than integral to their nobility. Kimulldrel is perhaps the most authoritarian, with the rule of the Shaznisis dynasty ruling with absolute power for the majority of its existence.
While Hvel’Avia is perhaps the least authoritarian due to the populist rule of Bishisoz Laissor II who established the 5 Dasulna of Hvel’Aria as an integral part of the governance of the state. The 5 Dasulna being a grouping of citizens meant to represent that group and petition the Prince on their behalf regarding proposed laws.
Foreign Affairs
Traditionally, the Seven crowns have been antagonistic towards the Three Dynasties and Mirengar. The first because of the invasion which caused the princes of the island to unify, and therefore birthing the national unification myth which firmly seated the Three Dynasties, especially the Krokinfae, as villains. This hostility has transformed into a sort of one-sided rivalry as Ravizanno was never truly big enough to challenge Hvel’Luthnor, but was strong enough to make any attempted invasion far too costly.
Outside of Ravizanno, the relationship is sometimes referred to as “The Thorn in The Dragon’s Paw”. The Seven Crowns also has a deep seated rivalry with Mirengar, though it is mostly focused on trade. In times past, this rivalry was considered more serious, but Mirengar has asserted itself more and more as the dominant trade power in the Ruby sea in recent centuries and Ravizanno has found itself sidelined.
Ravizanno merchants have often found themselves in second position to the Elves of Mirengar in foreign ports in recent years, a state of affairs that the Ravizans find greatly distasteful. The hatred of Hvel’Luthnor has caused Ravizanno to traditionally be aligned with their much larger rival in Tassendrel. However, Tassendrel’s rivalry with the Three Dynasties is not nearly as consistent as Ravizanno and the Empire was generally more concerned with the Dwarves of Elruth.
The inclusion of Hvel’Luthnor in the Cordiale with Tassendrel has generally soured Ravizanno on aligning with Tassendrel or the Cordiale in modern times. While the Princes of the Seven Crowns are certainly no friends of the rising human nations, they are not actively opposed to them either, as they are often much more concerned with their own perceived rivals. Trade also makes up an important part of Ravizan foreign affairs, especially since Merchants make up the noble class of multiple principalities.
Due to the trade dominance of Mirengar, The merchants of the Seven Crowns have gotten significantly less picky about their trading partners. Notably being one of the few eleven nations willing to trade with Sudragh and even having negotiated a limited trade deal with Turangar. Though this willingness to trade with rising human nations has made those trading companies and clans less welcome in some Dwarven and Elvish ports.
Governance of the common territories
Common territories are ruled jointly by the seven princes, however effective rulership falls to a Governor of the Confederation, an individual agreed upon by the Chamber of Thrones in an official vote. While for most of its history the only common territories were the trade governors of the Byralias, often just older successful master merchants who couldn’t travel as easily and the Governor of Ferandel (a much more prestigious position).
The competitions for the governorship of Ferandel to be given to a royal cousin or relative became so extreme that a series of compromise candidates instilled the tradition of appointing the governor from the ranks of the city guard. This has made the city guard of Ferandel a much desired post, and a retirement unit for renowned warriors across Ravizanno.
However the conquest of new common territories reopened the question. While the territories were put under temporary military governance until the end of the war of dawn, when the Seven crowns were once more forced to stop their expansion the solution became obvious. Seven governorships were created. Uvelt was split into Northeastern, Central, and Southwestern districts named after the cities the governor’s seat was located in.
Raghond governorship in the east, Kedmoln governorship in the center, and Gerwochil in the west. Vhalias was similarly split into Northern, Eastern, Central coast, and Southern districts, though they were named after local streams as few true cities existed before the conquest of the land. Arqiiva governorship in the north, Qyrattu governorship in the east, Lekkynu governorship along the central coast, and Uqdajj governorship in the South. The dynasties agreed to Randomly assign the governorships and shift the governors in order of seniority to the richest territories, thereby ensuring that no principality gained total control over the new territories.
In Uvelt, Rijudaria Lyriam, aunt of the Princess of Yewairedrel was selected as governor of Raghond. Kirinando Shaznisis, Half-brother and minister of the Prince of Kimulldrel was selected as governor of Kedmoln. Olejhenda Chilarus, Brother-in-law of the Prince of Hvel’Avia was appointed to the governorship of Gerwochil. Sunarion Ulichien, younger cousin of the Prince of Hvel’pir was selected as the governor of Uqdajj.
Avalise Nyroji, Sister-in-law and General of the Prince of Solidrel was appointed to the governorship of Qyrattu. Chilatus Daxrius, Nephew of the Princess of Khali’nor was appointed to the governorship Arqiiva. And finally Paxius Rydusien, Cousin of the Prince of Hvel’Faro was appointed governor of Lekkynu. These appointments had a lot more to do with loyalty to their Crown than ability, and many young, inexperienced rulers were assigned to the governorships in the hopes of longevity allowing them to gain control of the more prosperous territories.
Governance of the local tribes
As the centuries have passed, the principalities have pushed the Ravizanno Odenath tribes which had long thrived in the Mesa and Desert further and further. While the most powerful tribes, the northern Ilkkavitt tribe and southern Dochhikarr tribe were able to form confederacies and preserve independence when the principalities were at each other's throat, as they sold their services as auxiliaries to the principalities in exchange for leaving their lands and peoples alone the formation of the Seven Crowns meant that the tribes no longer had much leverage over the princes since the threat of siding with a rival was effective removed.
The tribes were pushed further and further inland as skirmishes took more and more of their territory. The tribes eventually found themselves concentrated in camps in the outskirts of Ferandel itself since the governors of the territory felt little need to evict the tribes from the desert as long as they didn’t interfere with the roads. However the recent conquests have actually revitalized the influence of the Ilkkavitt and Dochhikarr tribes.
The warriors of these tribes often signed on to Ravizan militaries or as guards for merchant clans to generate revenue for their tribes outside their desert territories as the few remaining sources of livelihoods left to the tribes largely left them impoverished. This meant that their martial traditions were largely still intact, as their traditional magics and training emphasized skills useful for skirmishers. First during the invasion of Uvelt, and again during the Vhalais campaign, the Odenath of Ravizanno proved themselves as talented special forces operatives as well as scouts and skirmishers.
This prominence of service during the conquests have led to the organization of the Ilkkavitt Dragoons and the Dochhikarr Rangers two special forces units in exchange for rights such as permanent self-governance, observation rights in the chamber of princes for one chief from each tribe, and hunting rights.
The Seven Crowns of Ravizanno largely ignore the technological advancements of humans but are actually rather quick to adopt the machines of the much more meticulous Dwarves. The admirals and merchants of the Seven Crowns have especially recognized the importance of taking advantage of any technological advantage possible to maintain Ravizanno’s independence from the larger Elven powers of West Ciradon.
The various principalities often utilize Dwarven runic artillery and anti-boarding weaponry on their ships to create a wide variety of offensive and defensive options to cover the potential spread of weaknesses that a ship could have. However human developments have largely been ignored due to their lower magic and lower quality nature. While the War of Dawn has proven their effectiveness to a certain degree, the Princes of Ravizanno have noted that the humans still lost that war.
The assembly line is one of the few exceptions, while not mechanized or divided to the extent of human industries, Elven masters have split their apprentices into different stations to learn different steps of the process of their trades while simultaneously acting as an assembly line. This has boosted productivity for skilled goods like glassworking while simultaneously producing higher quality and more prestigious results than a truly human style factory.
In this way the merchants of the Seven crowns have been able to utilize the unique advancements of Voskgardia while avoiding the fieldically damaging pollution generated by their more reckless and dangerous techniques.
The Seven Confederated Principalities of Ravizanno, while connected in purpose, are diverse in origin which has created an eclectic common culture with distinct regional variations. A lot of the most common cultural trade marks are centered around the hallmarks of the elite. The Seven Crowns share a deep love of the Yivakel style, a beautiful mixture of intricate twisting, Sarassean style columns, archways, and domes, towering Luthnori spires and intricate Luthnori tile patterns, complex Frierdreli Geometric patterns and reliefs, beautiful Wadelfi vine patterns and nature motifs, and unique and elaborate Farosis style colored glass windows.
Art is dominated by the flat and symbolic Jynnira style of portraits and the oceanic and colorful Tridyrvon style of landscapes. High fashion emphasizes airy light fabrics covering the whole body with either geometric patterns for the women or natural motifs for the men. Horned headdresses (stylized after the horns of dragons, drakes, wyverns, and especially serpents) are a common way for the royalty and merchant nobility to emphasize their wealth and the uniqueness of their houses. Veils have come into vogue over the last few centuries as a romantic symbol of courtly intrigue.
Some common cultural features among all the Seven Crowns of Ravizanno’s citizens include a complex feud culture that encourages nonlethal competition within a set period of time, a common oceanic and aquatic life motif in both metaphors and design, and a culinary emphasis on seafood. The peoples of Ravizanno, following the examples of their sovereigns and nobles have established an identity centered around challenging rivals to a competition over any perceived slights.
The competitions are generally encouraged to be appropriate for the slight, a drunken insult might result in a set of 3 armwrestling matches, but a public and sober insult could result in a challenge to a long race, or a certain set of rounds of a game, a published insult could result in year long competitions over art, craftsmanship, or business, while a slight upon honor could call for a competition that lasts decades. The type of competition varies by nature of the feud and the locale, but the competitions are agreed upon ahead of time, along with time period, with a neutral party selected to officiate if there is disagreement between the two parties.
Due to the importance of the seas, and the general clustering of the population along the coastline, oceanic and aquatic life plays a major role in most elves’ lives. Wave patterns and sealife often make appearances on the decorations that the middle and lower classes are able to afford. Seafood is also incredibly common in the cuisine of the Ferrano peoples, and the common Spinned Gurnard, the swarming and magical Lantern anchovy, and the large and meaty Losian Amberjack are especially common among the fish eaten and Purple-clawed scuttler crab legs are considered an especially luxurious delicacy.
Ravizans
Among the more common folk, the Elven citizens of the Seven Crowns can largely be split into 4 cultural categories, the Luthnori originated Khalins, the Sarassean originated Kimulli, the Tassendreli originated Farosites, the Frieredreli originated Aviars. The Khalins are by far the largest and oldest group and are concentrated in the fertile and hospitable northern coast in the three Principalities of Khali’nor, Hvel’Pir, and Yewairedrel.
Having shared heritage in a single state this is perhaps unsurprising, and their settlement by Luthnori merchants has given the modern 3 dynasties a claim over the island that the Seven crowns have continuously and enthusiastically rebuffed. The Kimulli are centered on the city of Kimull’nor and the principality of Kimulldrel and are the descendants of the Shaznasis dynasty and their followers who fled the court intrigue of the Saressean Empire to settle their own city on the dry west coast of the island.
The Farosites trace their origins back to shipwrecked Tassendreli who first settled the dry and hilly East coast of the island and are centered in the principality of Hvel’Faro. While the Aviars are the descendents of Frierdreli merchant outposts which quickly broke free when the Frieredrel when their sponsor kingdoms were distracted by war. The Aviars are centered on the Avias Savanna and the two principalities located there, Hvel’Avia, and Solidrel.
Khalins
The Khalins are a more agricultural people due to the more forgiving climate of the northern side of the isle. Their cuisine tends towards the inclusion of more grains, vegetables, and fruits due to the relative ease of farming in the region, and the more well rounded diet causes the elves here to tend towards greater height and athleticism. Hvel’Pir, especially is known for their high quality wines, considered among the best of west Ciradon.
Wide brim flat hats are common, especially in the countryside and despite the metropolitan nature of the coastal cities, togas have not been overtaken by pants among the Khalins. The most common type of competition is athletic competition, especially riding of various creatures, ball games, and wrestling. The Khalins make up the majority of the citizens by population but the divided nature of the Khalins means they are often unable to use this to dominate the Seven Confederated Principalities of Ferrano.
Kimulli
The Kimulli are by far the youngest and smallest of the groups, the natural resources of the Kimulli lands helps make up for the disparity. Loose pantalons and tunics are common to protect the people from the sun of the Kimull mesa, it is head coverings that are by far the most notable articles of clothing among them. Often complex, made of finer fabric with detailed patterns and covering much of the head and shoulders, and sometimes even the face, the different styles of head coverings are often a way for Kimulli to signal their allegiances to different causes.
For instance, A long scarf wrapping around a cylindrical hat and covering the chin, neck, and the top of the shoulders (called a Shazi style) is often utilized by the royal guard and a symbol of support for the policies of the current prince or princess of the dynasty. Competitions among the Kimulli tend to be competitions connected deeply to wealth, with the individuals spending the most money almost always winning as the Kimulli deeply value wealth and believe it to be an inherent indicator of hard work.
In Kimulli cuisine, coastal rice takes center stage as the primary grain, and while goat and sheep are more common, if not quite as common as among the Farosites, the Kimulli rely on fish and shellfish more than any other people for their cuisine.
Farosites
The Farosites the second smallest group by population, the Farosites are often considered the most industrious. Farosis’ origins as a more haphazard and unofficial settlement means that a culture of hardwork to make up for the lack of initial wealth took hold of the Farosites under the leadership of the Nytorian Dynasty. Their preference for mutton and goat in their food is well known as is their preference for capsaicin laden vegetables and style of flat bread which causes their food to be notoriously spicy.
The Farosites prefer tall hats with wide, hooked brims to keep the heat off their heads, and prefer light and intricate ponchos over thin shirts and rough pants for the ruggedness of the Kimull mesa. Competitions among the Farosites tends to take the form of craftsmanship competition, as the two offended parties agree to compete in who could make the highest quality creation of a specific type. If the individuals do not share a trade, they will often select an object neither has experience in crafting for the competition to keep the contest fair.
Aviars
The Aviars are the second largest group and not nearly as divided as the Khalins. They prefer conical hats with the peak cut off to let out the hair they traditionally keep long. The Aviars have adopted the custom of wearing loose pantalons but cover their torso with a short, toga-like covering that goes down to the waist. These are referred to as Kighi and are often a marker of status, with more complex and layered Kighi marking an Elf of higher status.
The Double Kighi, one draping from both shoulders, marks a member of the merchant-nobility. Lower ranked elves often wear a reed or leather pauldron to avoid overexposing skin to the sun, though this is also often covered in symbolry to mark status among the middle classes. For their competitions, the Aviars prefer games of mental skill above all, such as card games that involve skill, or simple strategy games.
Though, trivia competitions are perhaps the most famous, if rather rare example of this. Like the Kimulli, the Aviars prefer coastal rice for their grain, but they often utilize more poultry as well as melons, cucumbers, and tubers in their cuisine. Their food is best served communally when many different dishes are prepared and shared between the participants.
Ravizanno Odenath
The Odenath of the Seven crowns can be split into three categories, the Ilkkavitt and their sister tribes, the Dochhikarr and their sister tribes, and the colonial tribes. The Ilkkavitt and the Dochhikarr, despite their deep rivalry, are ultimately quite similar. Nomadic groups that primarily utilize light flowing cloaks, they wear simple and maneuverable tunics and pantalons underneath, along with face masks to keep dust out of their mouths, but it is the cloaks that are the primary signifier of their rank and status within their tribe.
The Ravizanno Odenath are largely reliant on scavenging, their herds, and trade for their sustenance so they often have high lactose and meat diets and are unusually tall even for elves and more muscular on average. They even worship the same pantheon, referred to as some variation of the Xhii chir Bejjaluvehn or the Ancient ones. These gods are said to be manifestations of natural phenomenon and that everything in nature that was given a name by elves had a god, these gods became more powerful the more their names were said and each soul went to live in the house of the god whose name they said the most.
The main difference between the two tribal confederations is that the Ilkkavitt are a strictly matriarchal society while the Dochhikarr are patriarchal, this is included in their interpretations of the gods which they see as being either female or male depending on their allegiance. This difference is also reflected in the position of men and women within the tribe as the Dochhikarr limit their women to taking care of the household and the children while among the Ilkkavitt the herd, and therefore the wealth was always the property of the women, and it is only through female connections that the males get access to the herd and their products.
Colonial Odenath
The colonial Odenath also worships a variation on the Xhii chir Bejjeluvehn. While some Odenath in west Ciradon see the gods as all male or all female in a reflection of the Feranno tribes, most of the tribes in the Vhalias territories see the gods as being either a mixture of male and female, gender neutral, or simultaneously both male and female depending on the tradition. The Odenath tribes of Vhalais are similarly martial to their islander cousins but because there is territory outside the control of the Seven crowns, many have taken to retreating to these lands to launch raids from.
This has caused them to force out other Odenath, starting a cascades of tribal invasions to the east. These Odenath have similar clothing, agricultural, and culinary practices to their cousins, though they generally have less access to finished goods. A few tribes have submitted to the rule of the Seven crowns though they don’t have the same independence or rights as the Ilkkavitt and the Dochhikarr.
Uveltans
The Uveltans are the last major group under the rule of the Seven Crowns and the only large lesserkin group. The Uveltans have a generally laid back and non-confrontational culture. Largely reliant on light gardening and herding for their lifestyle and cuisine, most Uveltans wore simple wool tunics and short pants. A largely peaceful and laid back culture focused on the beauty of the natural world, the balance between civilization and nature, and with a cultural emphasis on poetry as the most common form of art the Uveltans have taken poorly to Elven domination.
Uveltans respect a well spoken Lycan above all else and many are able to rise highly within their ranks when they are gifted with the skill of rhetoric. Young Uveltans often practice their poetry while performing the labors of herding and gardening and a Uveltan is only considered an adult when they write a unique Wherva poem (a poem with 21 lines in an ABB pattern with A lines twice as long as B lines in the meter) and recite it from memory at their birthday.
This poem is often considered a mark of identity and a line from it is often included in the poems of adult Uveltans as a sort of hidden signature. Music is also very important to the Uveltans, especially the Donax reed flute and small Terbanj drums which offer the core of traditional Uveltan music.
