The Republic of Hayd is a human island nation located in the Ruby Sea between West Ciradon and East Parthus. Often nicknamed the "Pirate Republic of the Ruby Sea" the country is most infamously known as the main base of operations for the Ruby Corsairs, a group of Mitannian exiles turned into buccaneers.

Hayd has a population of around 10,000 people primarily concentrated on its capital of Haydtown. The economy of Hayd is still relatively primitive, the small population guarantees difficulty in industrialization. Although there is some acceptance of modern technology from the outside such as firearms and imported steam ships, the economy of Hayd continues to be by and large what it was for centuries, relying on fishing and piracy.

The fuel that drove the residents of Hayd to accept this poverty was primarily pride and freedom, they fled here for they refused to bow down to the Elderkin and the generations past were willing to pay this price to remain free.

However in the modern day, much debate has been had on the question of returning to the homeland as Mitannia finally broke its chains and is now wealthier and more powerful than it has ever been before.

History

The Republic of Hayd was created by sailors, merchants, and navy personnel fleeing Mittania upon its subjugation by the Tassendrel Empire several centuries ago. The Tassendrel Empire subjugated Mittania for its ports but did not encourage the trade and maritime culture that previously flourished there, due to a need to isolate the country from foreign trade to become fully dependent on Tassendrel.

Those who refused to accept the loss of their livelihoods they had depended upon for generations fled to the island of Hayd, an island within the Great Chain Archipelago. Through sheer determination and resourcefulness they have managed to scrape up an existence through whatever means they have at their disposal. In the modern day where Mitannia is once again freed, there is frequent debate about whether or not they should return to their homeland.

Economy

Hayd does not produce any industrial products and relies on trade with industrialised human powers. Its economy is based on fishing and piracy. Before the industrial revolution they preyed on both human and Elderkin ships. While in the modern day they choose to avoid attacking human ships so as to maintain good relations with human nations so they could buy modern weapons, which they then use against Elderkin ships. Aside from the use of modern weapons, the industrial revolution has yet to take place in Hayd due to its small population, which has made the country extremely poor in comparison to other human nations.

Culture

The culture of Hayd is very similar to Mittania due to similar roots. Key differences are typically elven influences that have reached Mittania but not Hayd due to their centuries of separation. This however is slowly starting to disappear as the country becomes more and more influenced by Mittania.
