In addition to the popular exchange of messages via delivery mothcats, the more civilized realms of Tyrell enjoy a variety of refined methods for long-distance communication. Foremost among these are the Crystal Orbs and Enchanted Mirrors, marvels of elven ingenuity and dwarven craftsmanship. When inscribed with the proper runes and attuned to the leylines, a pair of such artifacts may be bound together, forming a persistent magical link. This connection allows one to see and speak with the individual on the other end in real time, regardless of the distance - provided, of course, so long as that both orbs remain tethered to the leyline network.
These devices form the backbone of many communication hubs, operated by trained mages who oversee the intricate processes of pairing and maintaining the magical channels. Anyone of sufficient means may request a connection, though naturally the possession of a personal orb is a luxury afforded only to the nobility and the more successful merchant houses.
This elegant system is employed across much of western Ciradon. The Empire of Tassendrel, for example, maintains an extensive internal network for its own purposes. One notable instance includes its use to maintain direct contact with the imperial garrison stationed in the remote Vosk Basin.
Given the prohibitively high cost and delicate construction of these artifacts, they remain well beyond the reach of the common citizen. And so, the humble mothcat continues to serve as the primary means of communication for the lower classes, running parallel to the more sophisticated crystal relay networks.
Additionally, Tassendrel has always, and despite the hefty cost of these contraptions, made sure to generously invest in their public and common utilization in cities and major towns. Lesserkin are also allowed them, providing direct access for news or education. These magic mirrors and orbs are typically considered to be secure for private communications. A highly talented mage can sometimes listen to the leylines and try to intercept these messages. However since the leylines are filled with immense magical energy it creates background noise and signals that are difficult to sort through.
