The Grey City
Deep within the Red Mountains dwells Degeran, the grey city. The city is well known for its production capabilities, boasting large stockpiles of iron and silver used to produce arms and armor for itself and other nations. The city and its inhabitants have been nicknamed the grey city due to how deep underground it is. Two centuries ago the city managed to unite the many warring guilds into one, a behemoth of a bureaucracy, that coordinates the cities production. Allowing them to match and in some cases surpass other dwarfen holds with superior manufacturing capabilities through coordination.
A key landmark of its very divided past are the 100 bastions, large fortified towers held by the waring guilds. Warfare was a common occurrence with violent clashes being common between the various guilds. This changed with the establishment of a Confederation of guilds seeking to end the conflicts, using their numbers they wrangled the other guilds into line, and spent a century long process of merging the guilds

UNIFICATION
Deep within the heart of the Red Mountains, the guildhold of Degeran stands as a testament to Dwarven resilience and ingenuity. Two centuries ago in the year 2743, Degergan was a divided city, torn apart by the constant strife between its warring guilds. The landscape was marked by 100 bastions, fortified towers held by competing factions, and conflict was a daily occurrence. However, the turning point came when a confederation of guilds, recognizing the need for unity, emerged to put an end to the internal conflicts.
Through a century-long process of negotiation and consolidation, finally in the year 2856 the guilds of Degeran were brought together under a single banner. The establishment of a centralized bureaucracy allowed for better coordination and resource management, transforming the city into an industrial powerhouse. The moniker "the Grey City" was born from the depths at which Degeran lies underground, as well as the unity achieved among its once-divided inhabitants.
Situated in one of the northernmost reaches of the Red Mountains, Degeran's strategic location allows it to control key mountain passes. This geographical advantage not only positions the guildhold as a pivotal trade hub but also grants it a formidable defensive position against potential invaders from the north or east.
Degeran's imposing surface towers overlook two strategic mountain passes connecting the northern reaches of West-Ciradon with the eastern territories. The valleys below, known as Ironreach Valley and Stoneshield Valley, are crucial gateways for trade and military movement. Ironreach Valley earned its name due to the rich iron ore deposits found within, sustaining the city's relentless industrial output. Stoneshield Valley, on the other hand, is dotted with ancient dwarven fortifications, standing as enduring symbols of Degeran's historical resilience.
Carved into the rugged cliffsides of Stoneshield Valley, the dwarven fortifications served as bulwarks against external threats. These defensive structures, remnants of conflicts like the Orcish War, bore witness to the resilience of Degeran during times of strife. While many fortifications sustained damage during the many Orcish sidges, many still being under repear after the War of the Dawn reflects the city's commitment to maintaining a formidable defense.

Degeran operates under a unique form of governance that blends traditional dwarven hierarchy with elements of industrial plutocracy. At the helm of the guildhold is the Thane, currently represented by Thrain Degbaken, a venerable dwarf with decades of leadership experience.
COUNCIL OF FORGES
The core decision-making body in Degeran is the Council of Forges, where representatives from each major guild convene to discuss and decide on matters of significance. This council ensures that the interests of the various guilds are considered in the broader governance structure. The Thane, presides over the Council of Forges, providing guidance and making decisions based on the consensus reached among the guild representatives.
The Council oversees Degeran's unique bureaucracy and plays a crucial role in managing the city's industrial output. Each guild operates within its specialized domain, such as smelting, forging, or enchanting. A network of bureaucrats oversees the coordination between these guilds and the council to optimize resource allocation, production schedules, and trade agreements.
While the Council of Forges and the Thane provide overarching guidance, individual guilds within Degeran maintain a significant degree of autonomy. Each guild has its own internal leadership structure, with a guildmasters overseeing day-to-day operations. This decentralized approach allows for flexibility and specialization within the guildhold, fostering healthy competition and innovation between the hundred towers of the grey city.
THE THANE
The Thane is expected to be the leader of the Guildhold and has the responsibility to select a spokesperson to represent Degeran at the larger political stage, the Red Mountains Congress.
Thane Thrain Degbaken, like his predecessors, is part of a hereditary system of leadership. The mantle of Thane is passed down within a ruling family, chosen based on a combination of merit, wealth, experience, and the family's historical contributions to the guildhold. Thrain Degbaken eventual successor will be chosen from among his offspring, ensuring a degree of continuity in leadership. Due to the Thane venrable age the succesion might happen sooner than expected, and his many children backed by many of the 100 guilds of the gray city still awaits the oficial declaration of who will become his successor.
The pride and joy of Degeran is the great arsenal, a vast complex dedicated for the dwarf equivalent of mass production. Due to the cities depth in order to channel the dangerous power of the field the city has become a famed arms dealer, selling magically enhanced weapons.
