NATIONAL FLAG
"No matter storm or sunlight, a ship is guided by a firm hand. We are that hand, to lead this nation like a compass does it’s crew."
- The Grand Protector
Mitannia, officially the Great Kingdom of Mitannia, is a Human-led nation in the south of West-Ciradon, by the coast of the Ruby Sea.
It is a nation of soldiers and militant powers, brought about by the constant border struggle against the Tassendrel Empire and the Divine Bastion of Umridel.
Throughout the dawn of the Third Age, Mitannia proved itself a military powerhouse, using the momentum of the War of the Dawn to break the political chains the neighboring Elderkin held over their lands.
Now ruled by a military junta, the nation prides itself as being the shield the enemies of humanity throw themselves against.

EARLY HISTORY
The area currently known as Mitannia was first settled by humans more than 1000 years ago, during the Second Age. It was left alone by the Elderkin in part due to how unexceptional its lands were. Its soil was not particularly fertile, its natural resources were unremarkable and it lacked any major Leylines where magic flourished.
Its only noteworthy feature was its coastline, in particular two ports that connected West-Ciradon with the Ruby sea. These ports, named Aquanova and Marechal, allowed the early Mitannians to conduct trade across the region, becoming formidable sailors.
The Ruby Sea during this time was under the rule of various Elderkin nations and city states. They coexisted in relative harmony due to the shared need to maintain the trade lanes, which benefited all.
VASSAL OF TASSENDREL
Around 400 years ago, the fledgling human settlements of Mitannia began to catch the attention of the Tassendrel Empire in the north. This was partially due to the wealth they had gained from their growing trade network, but mostly due to the need of a strong naval base to project a threat towards the Saressan Empire. Mitannia was the perfect candidate.
Tassendrel secretly offered one of the many petty rulers of Mitannia lordship over the entire nation, in exchange for control of Port Marechal and his loyalty. With the support of the Elves, his victory was swift, and soon he was named the Duke of the Duchy of Mitannia.
The Duchy was perhaps the most oppressive and autocratic of all human states of the time. While its monarchy and aristocracy enjoyed fabulous luxury and wealth thanks to Tassendrel's influence, the common citizenry languished under high taxes and crushing poverty. The oppressive nature of the regime was supported by Tassendrel, as it guaranteed that the government was in a constantly precarious situation, therefore more dependant on Tassendrel support.
The Elven 'Empire of Tassendrel'
Under the overlordship of the elves, the trade that had previously flourished for centuries declined due to the oppressive nature of the state. The sailors and merchants who once conducted this trade instead chose to flee the duchy and become pirates. These pirates became known as the Ruby Corsairs. The Ruby Corsairs primarily operated within the Ruby Sea and seized several islands to act as their bases, these pirates are marked by their impressive naval prowess, forming up the best of human pre-industrial naval forces.
In more recent history, due to Tassendrel’s internal political conflicts, Tassendrel became increasingly neglectful of its Mitannian vassal. As a result, Mitannia’s oppressive political structure became increasingly difficult to maintain. The Mitannian crown turned to its other neighbor, the Elruth Empire, for support. This was what ultimately caused the downfall of the duchy for when the Elruth Empire collapsed due to its exhaustion from the War of Dawn, Mitannia was left in an extremely vulnerable position.
THE REVOLUTION
When the inevitability of Voskgardia’s defeat became apparent, the Voskgardians, out of fear that their knowledge and technology would be completely wiped out by the elves following their defeat, began looking for areas to evacuate their forces and resources into. The nobles and government officials sympathetic to the Voskgardian cause, agreed to harbor the Voskgardians in what would be known by history as the “Midwinter Pact”.
The oppressive nature of the Mitannian state guaranteed that peasant rebellions were a common occurrence, and with the end of Elruth's support of the duchy, it didn't take long before another peasant rebellion broke out in the country. All expected it to be quickly to be put down by the duchy’s forces, if not, then surely by an intervention from Mitannia’s overlords. However, when the Duchy's Army expected peasants wielding pitchforks, they were met with lead and thundering artillery. Within a week, Tronitz had been seized by the rebels and upon the royal palace proudly flew the banner of the Voskgardian army.
The new regime that was established by the rebels was a military dictatorship intended to rapidly militarize and industrialize the nation. The government was headed by a high ranking military officer supportive of the revolution, adopting the title of “Grand Protector''. The Voskgardian exiles quickly gathered their numbers and worked to introduce their technology and industry to this new nation, in preparation for another confrontation with the elves. As a show of its newfound independence, the nation was proclaimed a kingdom, with the young heir to the Falkhurst house, Haakonnen Falkhurst, named King Haakonnen I.
MODERN MITANNIA
In the years that followed, the Kingdom flourished, growing off the experience from the Voskgardian exiles and their own innovations.
Today, the Mitannias proudly consider themselves the shield upon which the enemies of Mankind shall throw their hordes upon

MITANNIAN IDEOLOGY
The Kingdom of Mitannia follows an ideology unofficially known as "Mitannian Statism". It consists of 3 main ideological tenets that guide the policies of the modern state.
Military led economy:
With the threat Tassendrel Empire and Umridel looming over the country, the most pressing matter was to build a military industrial complex capable of sustaining a modern industrial army. The development of many sectors of the Mitannian economy are rooted in this need.
Sectors such as steel, machining, coal, and chemical industry were all initially propped up to serve the military, while their civilian functions were largely ignored. Large portions of the supply chain are dominated by state-owned companies formed shortly after the revolution.
These companies are majority owned by the Mitannian government, which allow them to prioritize supplying the military over civilian needs, even in situations where serving the civilian market might prove more profitable. Mitannian industrialization would have been impossible without the Voskgardian exiles, who make up the remaining portions of Mitannian industry. These are employees from Voskgardian military industrial companies who have rebuilt their operations in the new country, they frequently cooperate each other and are informally known as the "Tirgaard clique".
Authoritarian Constitutional Monarchy:
The government of Mitannia mostly consists of military officers and technocrats and holds no democratic elections. Members of government are mostly promoted based on merit or loyalty. The king acts as a "safeguard against dictatorial subversion". He does not have the ability to participate in day-to-day politics but has the power to fire high ranking members of the government at will, including the grand protector. This power was used once during a purge of ultramilitarist officers.
Technocracy:
The need for rapid industrialization gave scientists and engineers immense political power within the state. Universities act as political organizations as much as they are institutions of learning and research. Becoming a researcher or engineer is often the easiest way for regular people to enter politics, the other being joining the military.
Due to the needs of the country, humanities like art and literature are downplayed in Mitannian education while natural sciences and engineering are emphasized. Voskgardian exiles once again play an important role as they were the most skilled scientists and engineers during the initial phases of industrialization.
Scientific achievements are also heavily propagandized, with important scientific breakthroughs gaining as much propaganda coverage as military achievements. One of such propaganda efforts is the Tronitz Enlightenment Hall, a great cathedral-like building that acts as a scientific museum and honors great inventors and scientists.
Despite its celebration of science and innovation, some of its practices are criticized by academic communities for sacrificing accuracy for propaganda value. Such as the museum's celebration of the inventor of gunpowder despite most historical records suggesting that gunpowder had no single inventor and was a creation of accident. These practices are often seen as going against the original purpose of the program.
