Griffins are a species of Fieldic Beast native to the mountains of Parthus. Covered in a thick layer of feathers, griffins have four powerful legs with talon-like claws, a pair of wings on their back, and razor sharp beaks. They have thin tails covered in feathers and pointy ears. The ears in particular are used to communicate expressions of openness or hostility. Body lengths of griffins range from 112 to 150 cm (around 3 to 4 ft).
Despite their large wings, griffins are primarily land animals. Their wings are used for gliding and ambushing prey from above. True flight is only possible in areas with strong leylines. Though griffins prefer to live in leyline rich environments, they are capable of living without them provided the environment is right. Griffins are ambush predators and scavengers who typically feast upon goats, mountain lions, foxes, and birds. Though they do not naturally hunt people they can be dangerous if threatened or provoked.
Griffins are believed to be evolutionary relatives of Featherdrakes. Female Griffins lay eggs, but care for their young until their offspring reach maturity. Griffins have been known to hunt in packs. During the Second Gate War the dwarves of the Eternal Empire began to breed griffins for hunting down the insect-like creatures who escaped the caverns and tunnels of the Pharakaatus mountains. These griffins soon became popular for use in hunting and warfare as trained attack animals.
Originally their native range was confined to the mountains of East and West Parthus. However griffins were introduced to West Ciradon in 460 SA to help control the Šovish Lynx population that had become invasive. Griffen hunting became a common pastime for the dwarves, using them to hunt mountain goats while hiking on mountain trails. Griffins are occasionally used to guard the mountains in times of war. The West Ciradon griffin population became endangered following their use in the War of the Dawn and Elruth Civil War.
Griffins are native to Central Parthus and introduced to West Ciradon.
